Howdy all, Just bought a 97 with a 5 speed and have a question. The truck seems to run great but when I compare it to are other 97 5 speed it's a little different. The other truck has 350k and at about 1900rpms the turbo kicks in and that thing takes off! My new truck has 125k and does not do this, you can run it to 2500rpms and you dont get that boost feel. It has good power but just not that boost feel. Both trucks are bone stock 4 door long beds 4x4s. My Dad says he does not remember that truck having that much boost when he first got it and that something has seemed to change.................Any ideas what the difference is? Thanks for any help.

Blown Turbo. Take off the intake that hooks up to the turbo inlet and check to see if the impeller has any dents, bends, or imperfections.

also, check the stock DP (down pipe). if its the flat pipe, upgrade it. Also check the air filter. mine didnt spool until 2k when i got it, i looked at the air cleaner and its appeared as if had taken a swim in a tar pit. after replacing it, it spoled at 1500rpm. felt much better! change the fuel filter for good measure too.

Is there a way to test boost/the turbo to see if there is a problem there? Also, is there a way to test my HPOP to see if thats the problem? I'm going to leave the downpipe stock for now but might give the kitty it's walking papers. (money issues right now!)
Should I feel a definite surge in power when the turbo kicks in? My 02 does but that has more power anyway. My truck may be fine but I would like to make sure before I make it my main truck and can the 94. Thanks.

they only way i know is to check the fins for damage and test the shaft for play, see if you can move it by hand and use a caliper style measuring tool to measure play. i dont know what the todlerances are.

you may also have a clogged cat...

Check around the up-pipes at the base of the turbo, if the donuts are loose or worn out, you wont be building any boost pressure on the exhaust side. If the pipes are black, or have a bit of black around them, the exhaust is leaking out before it gets to spin the turbo.
