Towing with Over drive on my temp stays 150 - 160. Coming home i was behind a slow vehicle and i turned od off for about 20 miles my temp climbed up to 180. Every time i turn my Od off i can watch my guage go up. It prolly got to 185 before i turned it back on and then it goes down to the normal 160

What would cause the temp to rise with over drive off compared to on?

Anyone else have this problem.

thats pretty normal for auto tranny's ,..they average 90 to 100 degrees above outside temp..

In my manual tranny,..I see 220 sometimes

But why does it go up when you lock it out of overdrive? And then when you put it back in over drive the temp will come back down.

what have you done/changed on your truck....IE...whells, tires, are you pulling a load,..driving where there are lots of hills

Its got 456 gears on 38s towing maybe 8000 lbs. It was really windy thats why i turned it off last weekend following a motorhome. I didnt want it going back and fourth. Its has a mag hytech tranny pan. No hills that day. Just curius if anyone else see's a rise in tranny temp when they switch overdrive off.

180 is normal for the 4R100.... i wouldnt start to worry until you reached 210... then its getting HOT.... just try to keep it under 200...

reason it heats up out of overdrive is because your RPM's are faster which means your trans is spinning faster as well creating more heat......

their could be a few other factors like tire size, gear options ect

It sounds perfectly normal to me, with what mods you have, and the weight,..
