I have a 99 F350 with automatic, this weekend I'll be towing about 3,000 lbs of loaded tent trailer. The question is, because its a lighter load when I'm climbing through the mountains should I worry about taking it out of overdrive or should I be good?

Um... you'll be fine. Have you ever towed before?

I've towed far more than that through the Rockies in OD with no problems. Although if I dropped to 60 or below, I drop it out of OD to keep EGT's in check.

Dont even think about the trans. Tow it and go. If the trans needs something like OD off, you will know.

If you think it will help, push the button. If you like what it does, keep it. If not, push it again.

3000 is nothing for your truck.

Just like the others have said, your truck should have no problems towing that little of weight even up hills.

Hell when I tow 5k I keep the OD on unless the gears start searching.

If it keeps shifting in and out of overdrive turn it off. Otherwise you should be fine.
Agreed.

With that light of a load I wouldn't even feel bad about using cruise control

Last time I towed a relatively heavy load (bed full of camping gear, and a flatbed trailer with 3 utility ATV's and 3 dirtbikes, plus 4 guys in the cab), I set the cruise at 75 and enjoyed the ride, just kept an eye on EGT's on the hills.
