Hey all,

I have had my '97 XLT, quad cab, DRW, automatic for just over 2 years. It has 221000 mi on it. Recently I noticed that when I shifted into D, or started from a dead stop after having driven for a while, first gear felt like driving a manual and very slowly letting out the clutch. I would have to bring the revs way up and then it would eventually grab and I would get moving. In the past it has occasionally stalled out the engine when I put it in R after a long drive, but it was rare so I never addressed it.

It got real bad about a month ago so I took it to Ford (I would fix it if I can but I was in college with no tools and no time). They said they thought it was the solenoid going bad, but it would be pricey to drop the tranny and take it apart for an overhaul. Well this morning the tranny went nuts. Same problem, but it wouldn't leave first gear. I have it in the shop now, and my friend said it could be the solenoid seal and/or the band.

Does this sound right?

I prefer to work on my truck myself, but I've never dived in to my transmission and money is tight right now. I need to get straight to the problem.....and solution.

Thanks all!

There are at least five special tools need to rebuild a trans. most can be made and if you never taken one apart i would start now theres around 300 plus parts . if you miss one part or cut a seal you be starting all over. atsg makes a good rebuild book buy one and check it out before you dive in . I think the manual goes for around $30.00
