Help!- Rear End busted--

SO...

Rear end busted. Took off from a stop sign and POW. Clunk clunk clunk clunk and truck no go. 2003 F350, 3.73 gears

How much to fix that...and what should I look for while its apart.

I know its the ringset, I had to drive home in FWD (which I found out the auto lockers dont work..)

I can handle it I think, Just take off wheels, axles, driveshaft replace gearset, reassemble..enjoy.

So-
Where to get ringset?
What else should I look at since the ringset busted?
Can I drive anywhere or should I just park it until its fixed?
What would a shop charge?

Gear set from Precission Gear, Then get a tru trac from Detroit Locker. Since your rebuilding it up grade it at the same time.

If you do not go with the tru trac. You will have to get new clutch packs for the limited slip, As well as new spider gears. Along with new pinion and ring gear.

In the end you will be much happier with the tru-trac from Detroit locker. Then use synthetic gear lube rather then the normal 80-90.

Do the install yourself. You can get an installation kit for like 20 bucks. Then you can do all the work yourself. Should take about a day to do the repair. If you decide to remove the axle when you do it. Which I recommend you do.

I just had to rebuild the whole rear end myself so I know where your coming from. You might as well do it all while your in there, just as stated above.

My total rebuild cost $895. That included a detroit tru trac (ebay), all new bearings and races (timken) (ebay kit), syn fluids, and an 08 diff cover.

Would you mind listing the sellers that you used? That way I can trust the ebayer I look up... That would be fantastic.

you wont believe this crap...but i took the cover off (now pulling axles, but trying to find a suitable jackstand..hmm..

The bolts holding the ring gear on have sheared off. Only one bolt head that I've found so far though...not looking swell. Ring gear though (sheared bolts aside) looks pristine so far.

Ring and pinion gear are 100% perfect. Not a single nick, scratch, missed piece and the wear pattern is excellent.

I definately need a new differential as it is scarred from when the bolt ripped off., trying to find a tru-trac locally or faster than 5 days. (weekend included) I think I'll reuse the ring & pinion gear..even the diff bearings are perfect, not a single scar on it.

I cannot explain where the other 11 bolt heads went, but they are sheared off--There is not even close to enough metal in the pumpkin to account for ground up heads. Its normal wear at most (aside from the tone ring flopping around and busting the ABS sensor. I have to imagine some dunderhead was inside there a while ago and who the heck knows

what about the ABS tone ring?

Strange. Could have gotten flung down the tubes. Probably a good idea to look down there. That's crazy though.

If you have to replace the carrier, you're going to have to set up the gears again. Can you post pics of the wear patterns on the ring and pinion? A new carrier will probably be very close as far as the backlash goes, but you may have to fiddle with it a bit.
