I have a 2001 7.3L I was towing my 20' enclosed trailer with 3 atv's up a fairly steep long hill. All of a sudden I smell oil and notice smoke under hood and out the exhaust. I pull over after a mile or so to find the right side (passenger) of my engine compartment covered in oil. As well as the whole underside of my truck and splatters all over my trailer. Saw nothing spewing. Shut it off, checked oil and about 3 qts low. Added, restarted and still no visible leak. I removed the wheel well and sprayed cleaner. Drove over 200 miles after this still no external leak.

I am now burning oil (5 qts per 140 miles semi hilly) and at low rpm's nasty vibration coming from engine. Smooths out at higher rpm's. Power loss as well. Heavy throttle sitting still black smoke will roll along with whiteish/ grey? (was late evening) smoke. When the exahust is sniffed it does not smell like oil. just like normal diesel exhaust only more visible.

I'm gonna guess you have a hpo leak somewhere along the line going to the passenger side head

I had a suspect injector in number 2 that I replaced with a used one that I THOUGHT was good, but when I fired up the engine after replacing it, it ran a bit worse than before I replaced the injector. I thought maybe It has been sitting too long (came from a shady independent shop) so I let it run for a bit to see it it would smooth out.
Then I noticed oil streaming out from the back of the head area. I tried to see exactly where it was coming from thinking I had blown a seal in the turbo or something, but it actually looked like it was coming from the union where the right up pipe joins the Y collector and goes into the turbo.
I put the original injector back in, cleaned up the oil mess and fired it back up.
No more oil spewing and it ran OK. Obviously my up pipe(s) are leaking, but I'm guessing that somehow the bad injector allowed oil to get into the cylinder where it found it's way out the exhaust and to the leak in my up pipe.

Well I have 4 cracked pistons with one hole.....
We think the oil was being sucked down on the down stroke causing excess pressure and it relieved itself out the dipstick tube top....
Rebuild or reman..... Hmmmm
