Has anyone been putting in any type of aftermarket cam? I am building a motor up and the cams trashed so I am thinking about putting something other than factory in just because it seems like the right thing to do.

Any suggestions?

I believe Diesel Inovations is the only company making one and it is a regrind of the factory stick.

did you end up putting one in? I saw on a previous thread you were thinking about it.

There's really no need, the stock cam is good to 600HP

I did not put one in. Factory regrind turned me off.

Stock came might be good to 600hp BUT, how much power could the same setup make with a different cam?

Good point ^^ if you are that deep into it why not go for it. I know swamps was messing with a few. And what does factory regrind mean? Wouldnt that make it smaller

If your going to make 600 or more horsepower then your looking at some BIG money into that motor.

Factory regrind is absolutely fine to do. Before they had aftermarket cams for the 4 valve Cobras it used to almost always be reground camshafts. Nothing wrong what-so-ever.

Take a factory cam and alter the lobes. Yes, it would make it smaller but you can't really look at it that way. They can sharpen the curve, cut the bottom side etc.

Ab-so-****ing-lutely true.

Diesel Innovations or Swamps is the ONLY people I would work with. Also, just because you can push a stock cam to 600hp, doesn't mean it is making power efficiently. Replacing the stock cam with a custom ground cam in the same engine will have a better power curve and most likely....

more power.

You don't need a different cam to be able to have power above 3500 on a stock cam. Injectors, tuning, IDM, valve train components, and turbo play a large role. Everything has to work together.

I will give one piece of advice.. If you replace the cam, be sure to tack weld the cam gear so that is doesn't come out of place. Once you break open the front of the 7.3 and see all the gears from the HPOP all the way down, you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Depends. There are cases were the cam is welded up and reground so that the profile has the desired ramp to lift and duration curve. This does not change the valve train geometry allowing the use of stock push rods/lifters.

There are other cases where the cam profile is completely ****ed with and solid roller lifters are used with custom length push rods.

Those are just 2 examples. There are different options for different people. Money and application (what you use your 7.3 for) play the largest role.
