So on my commute home I'll feel the trucks wheel lose tension and the truck want to veer left or right but the steering wheel doesn't move.

6" lift
37" tires
138k
dual steering stabilizers

Any ideas on what to look at first?

My local dealer has screwed me numerous times and we don't have any good diesel shops in the area.

Jacked the front end up and had a little front to back slop in the wheel(tie rods?) but it had no up and down play at all (ball joints). I turned the wheels to lock and it wouldn’t turn at all forwards or backwards until almost straight by hand. U joint bind?

U joints won’t cause slop in the steering. You need two people to check it. Idle the truck with your foot on the brake and shake the wheel back and forth. Have someone put their hand on every tie rod joint to feel for popping. On big lifted trucks it’s common the track bar brackets will crack and break. If no major popping or issues can be found, gearbox is most likely to blame.

I had something like this happen before and it was a broken bolt on my steering box.

U joints won’t cause slop in the steering. You need two people to check it. Idle the truck with your foot on the brake and shake the wheel back and forth. Have someone put their hand on every tie rod joint to feel for popping. On big lifted trucks it’s common the track bar brackets will crack and break. If no major popping or issues can be found, gearbox is most likely to blame.
I had something like this happen before and it was a broken bolt on my steering box.
Ended up being the Drivers side U joint and all 4 tie rod ends were shot.
