My truck is leaking small drops of oil onto the ground right below the oil pan, but there is oil all around the filter as well. I am not sure is it is leaking from the filter and spraying back onto the pan or wether it is leaking from the drain plug. Any ideas?

Clean off all the oil from the filter and first make sure it is tight. Then see if you can see where its coming from. Have you changed oil recently? Alot of times, the filter will back itself off some if it wasn't put on tight enough

Another idea is to put some tracer dye into to your oil and drive for a while check for leaks with a black light all the new oil should glow pointing to the problem.

Both suggestions above are great.

I would clean the filter, and oil on the bottom and tighten the filter up.

Check again tomorrow. If there is still oil, get up on top of the motor and look around in the valley. It'll be kinda hard to see, but find out if there is oil in the valley anywhere. Oil in the front of the valley indicates Hpop o rings usually, more towards the back could still be HPOP o rings (Primarily the rear plug) but could also be the EBPV rod or TUrbo O rings.

Any of these items can be fixed from within minutes to up to an hour...

IF you go with the tracer dye make sure you get a quality one the cheap ones don't illuminate very well we use tracer products p/n tp-3400-0601 all in one gas/diesel oil, diesel fuel trans fluid etc.
