Trucks a 2005 f350 6.0, had headgaskets, oil cooler, new pistons, honed cylinders, new kd oring heads, studs, ect. Done at ford dealer about 6000miles ago. Noticed coolant looks like a small amount of oil in it, coolant is the newer ford yellow extended life, not gold or orange. Ford figures its just some residule oil from the extensive repairs done, does that seem likley? Not building or loosing coolant, or pressure in degas. Would putting a coolant filter on get rid of it, to see if it persists or should i get a flush and see from there. Im 90% sure its not deisel in there. The picture is after banging the tank around to stir it up, normaly it looks pretty clean, just a kind of ring around resivour after sitting, but if you agitate it around you can see it like in pic thanks!

It's probably fine but if it bothers you, flush the system and start fresh and see if it comes back. You can also send out an oil sample and have tested.

Olypopper, ya im sure it would test positve for oil, visually looks like oil. Im just hoping it is from the work done, that they got some oil in the coolant system while apart is all. Wonder if a coolant filter would get it out or just pass threw a filter. I know a little oil can look like a lot, so im thinking there really aint much in there to look like that.

Get a roll of the Blue shop towels
roll up a couple and place them in the reservoir -- making a tampon here
drive the truck a few days
and remove the towels with needle nose pliers , by turning the pliers to roll the towel
The oil will catch in the towels, they will not come apart

The reason to test your oil is to make sure you aren't getting coolant in there. If you flush the cooling system with a cleaner then fresh water you know in short order if your system is tight or not.

Alsi I would think if it was the oil cooler, it would get worse fast? It hasnt really progressed just stayed the same. And also is the oil cooler the only way for oil to get into the coolant, as far as i can see it is. Water pump maybe?

I'd take it back to who ever did the engine work, and have them flush the cooling system, and refill it.
What he said, but if doing Hydro's trick, I would document with pics and keep an eye on both the results and the warranty clock.

Paying an arm, leg and nut for a dealer rebuild, there should be no hesitation taking it back in if anything is questionable.
