I've got a 1997 4-door XLT. I've been noticing lately that the doors rattle and don't completely close w/o quite a bit of effort. On closer examination, 3 of the 4 striker bars do not have the shim that makes for an easier-to-close and rattle-free door. The dealer tells me that the only way to get the shim is to buy a new striker bar at $27 a pop. I don't think so
They're available at NAPA. I believe I paid $3 for 4 of them. That being said, it's likely you need hinge bushings. Every Ford I've ever seen out of this body did. It makes the doors close MUCH easier.
Mine was also missing the plastic/nylon coating/bushing around the strikers. I bought new strikers att he dealership for $10/pop and never looked back.
Just go in and look for a door striker in the "HELP" section, itll say its for a Ford vehicle.
