Hello people I need some help please. 06 6.0 CC FX4 odo 180,000
I was headed home to pick up my new tuner from the mail that I ordered, Truck was running great and boost was peaking at 29-32.
Plugged it in and loaded up the SCT performance tune, test drive was horrible because the first time I rolled into the skinny pedal the engine studders at 50% throttle and the boost is only 20psi max even a WOT. Loaded back the stock tune and it still does it and boost is only 20 psi max. It has a brand new 03 CAC pipe, and power supply for the FICM 2000 miles ago. No problems at all until I loaded in the tune.
Boost at 29-32 stock? Something wrong there, your first indication. Over boost condition. Anyway, after loading a tune you have to give it some time to learn the strategy. (Search the forum, there's a lot on that subject.)
I tested out the performance tune on my '06.....took about 100 miles till things leveled out I'd say. Put it back to stock, as I don't have studs in yet. Took another 100 miles or so till it ran right.
Your issue is probably not due to the tune, but the tune probably made the problem more noticeable. Might just be a dirty turbo in need of cleaning....
I dont think its the tunes fault either, I have driven about 300 miles with this tune loaded up and its still surging at 50% throttle. My hpop pressure is spiking to 3500 under WOT and then bleeding down to 3200ish, is that normal?
Just a little update. Today I loaded in the factory tune and drove to work, boost hitting 27 easy, and HPOP hitting 4000 psi easily. At 50% throttle it is still surging but it's almost so faint you cant even feel it. Im stumped now :dunno:
the truck goes in tomorrow morning for the EGR delete,Studs,Gaskets ect...
do you think a custom tune will fix this or is something actually FUBAR'ed with my truck?
yep....the tune just made the problem more noticeable. You have something going on there. No tune will miraculously fix a problem.....the more power a tune pulls out of the engine, the more noticeable existing problems will be. If you had a tune to reduce power, I'll bet it would completely hide the surge. If you're paying a shop to do the studs, egr delete, etc., ...might as well have them diagnose the issue as well.
Yeah the Ford dealership is doing it all for me, ill have them chase it down. The odd part about it is when this happens the map sensor according to the OBDII tool is dropping to VAC side after it hits 22.9 psi. Once it drops to the VAC side it goes from -22.9 psi to -27 :dunno:
I read on another thread some other people where having the same problem, and according to them it is common on 06 trucks built in 05.5.
Truck is back and still bucking, do you think it could be the fuel spring?
the HPOP system is working as intended, boost pressure is back up to 27-29 psi. I just cant figure it out, everything looks normal. When the surging is happening I cant see any gauge surging with it. :dunno:
Running the hybrid race from spartan tunes now, the higher the hp tune I load the problem gets worse.
Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? In the cab, so you can watch it? I'd rule out fuel supply issues first. If the pressure at WOT is dropping significantly and not recovering quickly, your fuel pump isn't keeping up with the demand for fuel. That doesn't mean it's the fuel pump......it could be a restriction in the fuel pick up in the tank, assuming your filters are new. Check the pressure and go from there. By the way, look under the truck and see if you have a metal or plastic fuel tank. If it's metal, that means problems with delamination inside of it need to be ruled out. The coating comes off, plugs the pick up, the HFCM, even the lines. The metal tanks were notorious for that. I'd rule that out immediately......just take a look and see if it's black plastic.
I do not have a pressure gauge, but I did do the blue spring upgrade and its still surging. I have a plastic tank. do you want to see the datalog? Map,Turbo psi,AIT,TPS(pps on sct),RPM.
The Problem is confirmed to be pressure, the gauge even gets down in the 25-30 psig range on the throttle hard. My question is do I replace the HFCM with a High pressure pump or just add a lift pump? Dont really want to get in a battle of which one is better just need help understanding which or both may be adequate. Will a helper Lift pump cure the low pressure problem????
Not sure what pump that is. But if it is big enough for larger injectors it will be fine for stock. The regulator spring will make sure you aren't sending to much pressure.
According to everything I have read it disables the factory Regulator and return and has one built into the pump housing, thanks for the info it has been very helpful.
