Just want tho post this for all the Northern "Salt" Region PSD Folks:

If you have RUST on your oil pan, take care of it immediately!

Mine is in REALLY bad shape, and although it is not leaking YET, it is beyond repair, and I will have to "Band-aid" it until it does leak.

It is rusted all the way up the pan, under the cross-member, and in places where I could not tell until I cleaned it up and started scraping the paint off. It's horrible, I found one spot where it is clearly indented approx 3/32 of an inch.

I knew it had rust, but it was so covered in grime that I had no idea how bad. When I cleaned it I noticed it was worse than I thought, but after scraping the paint off and seeing how much rust pitting there actually is... I hope and pray I can go another 2 years before I have to pull it and replace it.

FTR, when it does come to that point, I plan to buy the equipment to do it myself... and do the exhaust manifolds, bellowed up-pipes, and new studs on top and bottom. That is the plan, anyway. :tard:

Well, I have now done 3 coats of paint on the pan. I'm really just hoping this will retard the rust to the point where I won't have to replace it for a few years.

Maybe by then I will have the needed tool already... or at least the money to fix it.

Anywho, here's the pics of the pan before I cleaned/scraped it. I wish I took pics of it after sanding it with a wire wheel, stripper, dremel, and flap disc grinder, as well as hand-sanding where the tools wouldn't reach. Oh well. I'll post up pics after the 4th and final coat of paint.

It certainly looks better.... but it's just hiding the really bad spots, really.

I tried to buy the sample kit from KBS but they don't ship to Canada.... I phoned and emailed the company I was given for the Canadian re-distributor and have not heard anything from them. Ugh.

Ok, paint process is done, now I'm giving it a day and a half to dry because it's humid as hell out.

Anywho, here are the pics, yes, I used a brush, which is why there are streaks. It's not a beauty pageant... it's preventative maintenance! :rofl:

Not too long ago I saw a company with a "fix" for this. They had a Fiberglass mold of the oil pan and used a special epoxy to bond it over the pan. I think they were in the Maine also...

They are in Mass I believe. It wouldn't work for my pan tho, the rust goes too far up. :doh:

I used the Rustoleum High Temp "Grill" Paint.

IMHO i would have used some POR15... it is supposed to be a rust neutralizer...

I couldn't find any.... every place I went looked at me like I was speaking Chinese when I asked if they had any. I figured this was the next best thing. :dunno:

you can order POR15 right off the internet... they have a starter kit for like $20 or something... i ordered it, I just haven't used it yet.

POR15 is great, but you need to spray/brush a top coat over it. Just an FYI.

Silver Bullet (from Summit) or FrameSaver... each will neutralize the rust. Be careful of humidity when you apply it

IMHO i would have used some POR15... it is supposed to be a rust neutralizer...

I used it a few times now, it works well and with a topcoat it works even better. I am going to order more soon, if you get some make sure you get it in the small cans (it goes a long way!) because it is very sensitive and difficult to keep from hardening.

Looking at your before pictures is almost the same as my pan. Living in the north sucks for this very reason!
