Recently put a used motor in my truck and decided to leave the injectors it had in there because i was told they where new, surprise surprise they probably the ones it came with in 1999 and doesn’t like cold starts, same symptoms an old set. Of injectors had in my previous motor, The new motor is also an e99 with 2001 electronics so I figure its best to put my newer 01 injectors back in, maybe even pick up a few extra ponies free of charge. I did this job once before and and after install it was hell to get it started back up so i wanted some insight on what all i should do to prime it. Ive heard fill hpop res, but from what I understand thats low pres. oil and just feeds the high. I plan on cranking w/o glow plugs for a while to get some oil in the logs as well, but how long ive heard 5x5 up to 10+ times and for longer. Also what opinions do you guys have on filling rails up from the drain ports so it doesn’t need to fill up such a large volume to begin with?

no experience, but just watching a lot of YT videos,
I have seen it suggested to remove the glow plugs to reduce the torque required to spin the motor over.

throw blankets over the valves, or just set the valve covers back on the engine, to reduce splatter when it starts pumping oil.

Thats the plan, i wonder how long it would take to get it nice and primed.

I would just be guessing big time, but from the videos I have seen,
where it took them 5 or 6 repeated spins,
each spin was at least 30 seconds .

for myself, with the glow plugs removed, and the batteries are on a Battery Tender and hot at 13.3 V,
after letting Starter Cool down, try again, until you see oil running out of the Injector cups.

no point in trying to start it, until oil runs out of the injectors cups

AGAIN: I am just repeating the Internet stories.

Take it easy on your Starter & Batteries, you Do NOT want to Ever crank it over for 30 seconds! That's a Lot of electrical load that will damage things.

Even with the GPs out I wouldn't crank it that long and certainly Never 2mins at one time...

So here was my procedure for starting, after installing injectors i left glow plugs out and cracked open the 2 3/4 plugs on the top of oil rails in engine vally. Cranked it over 15-30 seconds at a time then checks for weeping. Once it started weeping I tightened them up, one more 20 seconds without glow plugs. Reinstalled glow plugs, one 15 second crank no start, second 15 second crank it fired up on all 8. Smoked a little, but ran decent. Still starts with a bit of white smoke but it definitely hasnt worked the air out yet, ive only driven it 10 minutes or so since just in neighbourhoods.

question. Why can't ya take the oil rail plugs out and drip some oil into the rails, reinstall the plugs? Would that not help?
Would work just fine -- use a large syringe and a small hose to flow the oil in
there are unused plugs on the oil rail, on both heads that will work for this "priming"
