I got a new powermax on and I like it. It sounds good runs good. Obviously its a little laggy but what do you expect with stock injectors.

Here is my question though; Are my EGTs high???
When i cruise on the highway i see around 750-850 which I can handle but when I hook up to my mud truck (just an old blazer/18ft bumper pull) and switch to a tow tune I see 1,100+ pretty constant.
Is 1,100+ degrees to high on a regular basis while towing???
Would bigger injectors lower my EGT's at all???
I was surprised to see high numbers like that.
Would regearing my truck for the 37"s lower my temps at all???
Any ideas or things to try would be great.

Did you get your tunes updated?
That helped my EGT's and lag.
I also got my FICM tuned from PHP which helped with lag and mpg,s.

Who's tunes are you using? You need updated tunes for the new snail. Laggy is not a word I hear commonly associated with a powermax, it's not really a big turbo at all, pretty close to stock.

If anything, your 37's are what's causing your higher EGT's.

How much weight are you towing?

I would start with new tunes before anything else.

x3 on updating tunes. Mine was VERY laggy with stock tunes (or my old custom tunes) and would fall out of it's efficiency range and start surging. Get the new tunes.

I got my tunes from Matt at Gearhead.
His tunes are great, I use his SRL tune as my DD.

I have new tunes.(IDP-tow,race,street, Gearhead-SRL+,8K tow, unlimited tow)
I have brand new tunes from Matt and Eric. I have three tunes from each written for the powermax. I have not towed with Matt's tune yet though. The hotter temp were in Eric's tow tune. I also told them about the bigger tires/stock gears and everything else. I've worked with these guys before on tunes. I also know with Matt's tune he tells you to set the revs per mile which I have done.

I will say running the SRL+ was not as laggy as the X-race tune. So I'll have to try towing with Matt's unlimited tow tune and check the temps.

If I was not in tow haul in the tow tune my truck would shift into over drive and it would get real laggy and high EGT temps unless I got it up to about 75. If it stayed in 4th gear though I didn't have any problems with temps(1,000 Degrees or so) just high revs/poor economy.

My guess on the trailer weight would be about 5K total. 18ft road warrior and a 77 k5 reg cab flat bed.

I tow with Matts 8K tow tune and it is fine.
That is with a truck that weighs 12K and a 10K dump trailer, 22K GCVW.

i had the same experience as you except stock 285 tires. With matts 8k tow tune and pulling prolly over 10k my egts would be around 1200-1300 going up a hill of course. I went threw several race tunes with matt and eric and couldnt get it from smoking. Mine would haz going up a hill empty. I took the turbo off and put my 03 back on. Much happier now

If you wanna keep the turbo maybe look into a batmowheel. I just put one on my 03

Yeah thats kind of what I was thinking. Batmowheel might be worth a shot. I'll have to see how Matt's tow tune is. His SRL is allot better then the other tunes I have so we'll see what the verdict is when I tow my truck again.

For my experience I share the same EGT findings as Buzzy. Temps were high and bumped 1200* on hills towing. I got the GOGO Stage 1 manifold installed with studs which helped the turbo lag TONS, EGTs are much easier to control hitting maybe 1000* on the hills. I still need to switch tuning around but it's all working good so far. I still haven't towed the boat with the new setup.

Are you running stock injectors?
The manifolds helped out quiet a bit?

I'm referring to the intake manifold modified by GOGO Diesel. Before the PowerMax the truck ran great no issues OEM lag with SCT custom tune. I dropped in the PowerMax with good results with no changes in tuning. There was still some lag but I would say it was just a tad better over stock. By far the biggest issue was the TQ lockup would bog down the PowerMax. So as I would head up a hill I would tap the brake pedal while accelerating to get the motor into a better RPM range. Adding the GOGO manifold helped this problem and added a TON of flow to the motor. It flat out hauls when on the pedal. At 50% pedal it will boost 25 PSI easily with EGTs easily controllable.

Yes, still using stock sticks with 175K+ on them.

With the Ex loaded up with kids, dogs and luggage plus pulling 10k. 1100-1000 was a normal # to see while cruising with matt's 8k tow. I never saw over 1300 pulling some pretty hefty grades but I let it kick down on the big pulls and just watched my oil and coolant temps. The only time I see over 1300 is when I am running Looney or SRL+ and even then it takes some work to get the Insight to alarm at 1401.
I think your 37's are some of the problem, if you do lots of pulling think about a re-gear or downsize tires for pulling.

definitely re-gear. It will not only help with your temps but will also help with your mpg and help with any lagging because of your tires. i regeared for my 37s and it was the best decision ive ever made.
