This isn't a question, just a neat solution.

I thought I had a bad tie rod, the steering wheel seemed to have too much play, and the (automatic) shifter handle had too much movement.

Turns out (when I removed the fuse dash cover) that there is 2 torqs screws holding end of the shifter handle to the steering column. Well these were loose. Hard to get at without a torqs bit and a 1/4" box end to tighten.

When I cranked them tight, steering wheel play went away, and my shifter is tight.

Go figure.....
