Ok, aside from being a total noob for not paying attention to my gas gauge...

I ran the Excursion out of fuel. I was able to get a gallon at the closest filling station but it still won't restart. I thought I remembered something about needing to prime the diesels when this happens so I popped the cover on the fuel filter and added about a 1/2 cup of fuel there.

She still won't start. Any other suggestions?

Done this a few times myself been in your shoes. Turn the key on and off about 3 to 5 times. The fuel system will prime itself. Also you can remove the fuel filter and fill the fuel bowl up with fuel and put the fuel filter back in the fuel bowl and secure the cover. Crank the engine for no more then 30 seconds at a time with a minute pause in between cranking so you do not burn up the starter.

Here's my post from about 2 min ago in another thread.

I've helped a few people start their trucks after running out of diesel.

For starters you NEED at least 5-6 gallons. It simply DOESN'T start with 2, 3 or 4 gallons! Cycle the key about 4-5 times for about 20 seconds each time and then crank. Time it, 20 seconds crank and then don't do anything for 1-2 minutes otherwise you'll burn the starter up. Usually by the second crank it's started and it will idle rough for about 5 minutes and then smooth out

Thanks for the help guys. Not sure why it didn't work last night unless the it was just to cold outside but I went back to it this morning and it started on the second try.

Ah well, got to pay more attention.
