Last I had any sort of gasket discussion with people I was told quite frankly the Ford grey (7.3L stuff??) was the top choice to use.

Using a small bead of gasket maker on a true physical gasket can't hurt either.

that supreme grey stuff.. i think I remember reading that it supposedly best installed on a spotless surface and with the motor inverted ?

unless a 6.7 tech chimes in I vote gasket with a light coating of sealant

From the 2015 Ford Workshop DVD. Nothing mentioned about letting the TA-29 skim over. Just apply small bead and install pan.

Very timely, my 2013 is in need of lower gasket work as I type. Is it best practice to replace the pan as well or simply clean off the old and replace with new sealant?

I replaced because it was tough getting loose without flexing it.
But new was only $35
