So Im pretty sure my truck has a rear main leak. Im not to pleased about it. Any ideas what this would cost for me to fix typically? I had a rear main leak on my old jeep and it was 800 bucks. It doesnt bother me cuase its leaking oil in my apartments parking lot but I do have to pay attention to the oil level.

More than likely it is the o-rings under the turbo pedestal that are leaking, as the rear mains on the 7.3's NEVER go out. Look under the turbo/ into the engine valley and see if its full of oil. 99.99% that is where it is comming from

yeah i bet it is the turbo pedistal o rings. they only cost about 8 bucks for both but i havent gotten around to replacing mine cause they dont leak yet so i dont know how hard it is to do. i lost an injector and fuel got into the oil and thinned it out so it leaked from there and it would run down the back of the motor and on the front of the transmission so thats prolly why it looks like ur rear main

Ya the oil is dripping from the front of the transmission. Ill check the pedistal o rings. When I changed the oil last I was down 5 quarts. Between changes Im usually down that much so I have been watching closer.

You're usually down that much? 5quarts between oil changes? Was that a typo?

Anyway I agree with the other posters. But, if there is oil in the front of your engine valley, it is most likely from the HPOP o-rings, not the pedestal. If there is no oil in the front of the valley, only the rear, then you are most likely looking at the pedastal leaking as stated above. A flashlight and a good telescoping mirror will help out a lot with this.

good luck!

Mine leaks like this too :( the oil leaks from right where the tranny meets the engine and where the starter is. i drip about one drop a day (not too much yet)

i got the orings here
Replacement O-rings for Diesel Engines

here is a good write up on looking for the leak

I bought the orings for the turbo and the HPOP. I will probably replace them all wile i am in there. just waiting for a chance to do it. gotta pull the turbo and that looks easy but takes lots of time the first time you take a crack at it!

YES I said 5 quarts. I only suspect it leaking and not burnong or having it excessive blowby. My IC boots are pretty clean my my intake tube stays clean too. Anything else I should be looking at?

Wow 5 quarts. that is alot to lose. any puddles under the truck? if so how big? my leak is about a drop a day. at that rate, it will take ALONG time to get to 5 quarts. I check my oil every time i fillup (usually about every 10 to 20 gal since that is all i can afford to put in!) and my oil level is still at full. going on close to 3k since my last change.
