I just had my 2012 F250 4x4 crew cab short box Lariat w/6.7L powerstroke serviced at the local Ford dealer. When I got it home, I checked the oils change sticker. It showed 10W30 was put in. If I remember correctly, the book caleed for 5w20 "synthetic". Am I missing something? Going to check the book tomorrow.

Manual recommends 5w-40 synthetic for bio diesel. Since I live here in CA and most stations are going to bio, it's easier to run 5w40 and not worry about trying to find a #2 station while I'm out of the immediate area. Some people run 10w30, and I believe most dealers are doing that standard.

Just checked the shop ticket ( and searched online) and found it should have 10w30 synthetic. Shop ticket shows a price of $4/quart. Best I could find online price was $7.69/quart. Pretty sure they put in straight 10w30, not synthetic. Calling them tomorrow.

I’ve never ran synthetic in my truck. Just Motorcraft 10w30 conventional just like the fill cap suggests. Where are you getting “synthetic only” from?

I didn't read anywhere in this thread that said "synthetic only", other than OP saying he thought the manual called for synthetic. Where are you getting that from?;)

“Just checked the shop ticket ( and searched online) and found it should have 10w30 synthetic.”

Every post he’s made he’s insinuated synthetic only but never used the word “only” so my quote is ever-so slightly off. But his posts tell the story.

Synthetic is not required by any stretch of the imagination. I’ve got nearly 200,000 miles running 10w30 conventional and my truck can still pull the Titanic off the ocean floor. Many people are under the impression that synthetic is better… but that’s not always the case.

The ONLY SYNTHETIC oil specified by the workshop manual for the 6.7L Power Stroke engine is Motorcraft® SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil. Motorcraft® SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil is considered the standard oil to be used in this engine and is identified specifically on the engine oil fill cap. The use of any of the other specified Motorcraft® oils should be based on operating conditions, type of use, bio-fuel usage and customer preference. In most cases 10W-30 is going to be used at a Ford dealership unless you specifically ask for something else. It is reasonable to think that a dealership located in severe cold climates would choose to use 5W-40 and those in extremely warm climates may choose to use 15W40 as their standard.

Otherwise, if this is of any concern or interest to you the customer it is up to YOU to specify what oil you want -or- ask what they recommend based on your specific requirements.

I only use full synthetic oil in all my 5 Fords. My dealer is having a difficult time finding Motorcraft oil. I had to go wit Rotella T6 5 40 I tow out 5th wheel all over the country and don't know when or where B10 is served so full synthetic is best for me. I also like synthetic because ity's more durrable than regular oil.

I actually checked the owners manual, and you are right, it specifies 10w30. Not synthetic. Now I feel better. 2 friends are actually running synthetic in their 6.7's. 1 is a farm/work pickup, the other pulls a of of trailers. Just what they are comfortable with.
I haven't looked at a 2012 manual but it should guide you on oil choice based on use, normal or severe duty, and temperature range you operate the truck in. It's pretty hard not to fall into that severe duty category.
Also, the oil cap generally gives some generic guidance for oil grade. Ford doesn't specifically say use synthetic but they do recommend 5w40 for certain temperature ranges and use cases, that only comes in synthetic.

Ford dealers typically only have standard oil (non synthetic) in bulk for the diesel. Either 10w30 or 15w40 depending on what part of the country. Motorcraft doesn't have a synthetic diesel oil in those grades. If you request synthetic at the dealer expect to pay a premium.

I do my own oil changes, so even though I use synthetic oil it's still less costly than getting a non synthetic oil change at the dealership.
