Oil Cooler Replacement Without Removing Turbo and Intake?

Can it be done?

The reason I ask is I did my EGR delete and Oil Coller replacement last yr and on occasion the truck would get hot. My deltas are also anywhere from 5-20 differnece at times. I have changed the coolant filter several times and with the exception of one time, has always been fairly clean.

Yesterday the wife was pulling a horse trailer running 70-75 and it got hot a couple of times, by hot I mean the ECT went to 230 and then back down. The oil temp was hot as well. She slowed to 65 and it seemed to be ok. She added about a gal of water when she got to where she was going after it cooled down.

I should also add that this summer when we moved and I was pulling a gooseneck stock trailer about 30 miles one way several times, it hit the 230 mark as well. I added about a gal of of CAT ELC and all was well. I assumed that because I had changed about 4 coolant filters and not added fluid that that was the reason for the low level.

Any one else heard of this?

At times when just having parked and shutting off, you can smell coolant up front but no leaks.

You're gonna have to pull the turbo and intake. No way around it.

I'd be concerned about those coolant temps also, but they may not be due to the oil cooler. ECT's that high would lead me to believe either your thermostat or your fan clutch aren't working correctly. Without knowing your engine oil temp's at those times, it's kind of hard to say if it's your oil cooler or not.

Do this: gradually let the truck get up to temp (ECT 190* or more) and go for a 15-20 min drive at a steady 60-65 mph. What are your ECT and EOT temps?

That coolant disappearing thing is not cool. Might wanna park nose down and check for water in intake if you have EGR cooler still there. Also might want to psi test that cooling system.

My coolant started mysteriously disappearing and it was a HG and stud job shortly after.

I did the EGR delete and replaced the oil cooler at the same time almost a yr ago.

Did you have coolant in your oil or was it going out the exhaust? My fear is that it is going out the exhaust, if that is possible, therefore meaning the HG is shot.

After she parked it yesterday, it sat til this morning. I went out to check coolant level and change the coolant filter, I removed the cap and it still had pressure.

The wife came home last night asking if I wanted to trade it in, I am seriously thinking about it. I love my truck but I don't thave the money to sink into head gaskets.

When my HG's blew it never once smoked, puked, or any of the usual signs. I noticed that when I would stop at a redlight that I could smell coolant through the a/c vents. I got out and the degas bottle was empty, filled it up, about 60 miles later it had dropped quite a bit. Went to NAPA and got what I needed and did the psi test, sure enough I could hit 18-20 psi pretty quickly. It got studs and gaskets over the following week.
