Looking at purchasing a 2000 F350 7.3 with 208K miles (original owner). When ignition is turned on during WTS the truck makes a strange noise in the engine compartment for the first 15-30 seconds, then it seems to stop. Sounds alot like the Ford gas engines when the fuel pump is first charging but louder and a higher pitch. Noise does stop at start or before, doesn't hesistate to start, and I don't know the age of batteries. I do know (paperwork verification) that a Ford dealer did diagnostics check at 200k, and did replace two glow plugs (everything else checked out fine per the report). Owner says it has made the noise for as long as he can remember. I have had several 7.3's, and I have never had one that made the noise (at least not noticeably). Red flags, thoughts?

I appreciate your feedback in advance.

I know there is a small compressor under the hood for the vacuum. On mine when I turn it koeo I can hear the fuel pump and the vacuum Pump for about as long as your talking about. I don't know that I would say its a high pitched sound though. Kind of a light grumble maybe. You can definitely hear it though.

the fuel pump is under the driver seat on the frame rail.

the vacuum pump is under the hood and is probably what you are hearing.
