I believe it bogs down with the starting fluid because diesel helps lubricate and starting fluid cuts the diesel out and w/o more coming in it just is metal on metal. I am having a simular issue as I am not getting any fuel into the engine atm and I tried SF and got the "bogging down" you speak of. So no more SF until I figure out why no fuel

The itense amount of power that happense because the pump advances the timing a chit ton to get some more rpms so it can suck some fuel from the tanks.

I would guess like a 10-15*bump in timing.
