we have a 2000 ford 250 diesel that will not start. the vehicle has been sitting for about 6 months now and was just brought in today. we have tested all the glow plugs and the ohmed between .5-.8 ohms so i belive that is good. we check for fuel at the filter by the gpr and it was fuel. we have also verified the correct voltage at the gpr. the batteries have also tested good. we are looking for any ideas of where to go. we are not diesel techs but we do have over 30yrs auto knowledge. any help would be great thanls.

(1) Is the oil in the motor full and in good condition?
(2) There is a cam position sensor on the front of the motor, common problem. It feeds a signal to the motor computer.

Scan for codes. Check voltage at batteries during cranking. Need to have at least 10.5 volts during cranking to run the PCM.

cam sensors as said above. Drain fuel out of filter bowl and make sure it will fill back up when the key is turned on. When my fuel pump went the filter bowl was full but not enough to feed the engine, but when drained it wouldn't fill back up. Check the High Pressure Oil Pump level in the reservoir on the top of the engine at the front drivers side(remove the allen screw plug) you should be able to see the oil near the top, this helps feed the injectors. Hope it works out for ya.

Check fuses.

When you checked the fuel bowl, did you replace the filter? Have someone turn the key to the on position, listen for the pump to start cycling fuel. Do you have a way to check fuel pressure? A quick, DIRTY way to see if it is building any pressure is to open the drain a few seconds after turning the key to the ON position. Should squirt out the drain in a hurry.

Is there oil in the HPOP reservoir? How is the oil quality?

the oil is at operating range, the bowl in the front fills with fuel while key on on not cranking, their is oil in the hpop it is about a half inch below the top. the oil has 8 new quarts of rotella and the fuel filter is about 8 months old. the computer did have stored coed about communication but nothing has come back. the cps i believe the other tech checked and said was fine. im still hoping we can get it so i dont have to send off to a dealer.

the oil in the hpop is dirty and very dark? can i use a normal fuel gauge to check pressure or do diesel have special adapters and what is the operating range? ill also go back to check the cps to make sure though.

There isn't a port "built in" to check. You can rig a line to the fuel drain valve and open it when you have the gauge attached. Kind of crude, but works.

Oil in the hpop is usually "looks" dirty" and should be within a half inch or so from the top.

How long have you been cranking on it?

Can you monitor the data stream from the pcm?

GOT IT RUNNING !!!!!

Thanks to everyone out there for the help we got it running., I belive from it being a little low on oil when coming in and for sitting for so long it was hard to start.....i let the gp cycle 3 time then cranked for a while and it fired so again thanks for the help. :)

Glad to hear you got it running. Was it 8 qts low when it came in?? I guess that'll do it.

im in dayton ohio and yeah it was that low when towed in i gues i didnt even think to look at that...im use to gasoline eninges where they will run with no oil.

why dont these trucks have a low oil light?

They don't need a low oil light, they shut off when they get too low because the HPOP runs out of oil.

Personally I try to check the oil in my truck at least once a week or any time I let any engine (tractor, lawnmower, etc) sit for a while I check the fluids before the first time I start it.
