Hello, I recently got a 2002 f250 with the 7.3l. while driving about 20 to 40mph, I push the pedal and when I let go of the pedal I feel and hear a "clunk". This cluck is very responsive to the gas pedal. It only happens when I let go of the pedal or push it at low speeds. Another issues is that it also vibrates as I pick up speed. specially on the freeway. It doesn't shift as smooth as I would like but you can definitely feel the shifts.

Yesterday morning as I pulled out the driveway and took off, the truck would not pick up speed. I'm at almost WOT and I still couldn't get past 30mph. I parked it, I drove it later and it drove just fine but still had that clunk. My first assumption before yesterday morning were the U-joints but now I'm assuming more towards the torque converter.

No Codes of any sort and there is definitely the right amount of fluid in the trans. All stock and no tuners at all. Any thoughts guys?.......
If it is the torque converter, which one should I get for my stock set up?...........

Thank you!

Ummm... I think you're being a bit optimistic :(

That doesn't sound like a TC problem alone to me. The clunking, slipping, my advise would be to get it to a reliable Transmission Shop (get some recommendations, find a good place that knows both Ford & diesel trucks) and get their evaluation.

I don't know how many miles or what kind of driving it has on it but, the 4R100 trans is the trucks weak point. Be prepared for bad news...

Thank you for replying! Sorry, I wasn't trying to sound optimistic. I just assumed it was the torque converter because of the way it vibrates. The slipping is not very bad but you feel the changing of gear like a slight tug. I've heard those 4R100 are weak links so I fear the worst! ? ...... The truck has about 198k miles and has no sign of tuners or anything like that. Still has that big bulky muffler underneath to.

i thought the same thing, at first, on my 02. ended up
being that all of the u joints and carrier bearing was shot.

got new joints, carrier, and a balance, and it drives smooth
as butter.

as for the slow speed at take off... mine does that as well
when it's colder than say, 45 degrees or so. once it warms
up, throttle response is normal. when the truck is still
cold, i can floor it and it wont do hardy anything until it
gets over 1300 - 1400 rpm, then it gets up and goes.

not sure if that's a fail safe built into the hypertech that's
on it, or some other issue...

i couldn't really tell the u joints were bad until i removed the
ds. then took out the joints, and the caps were basically
dry.

you can check the carrier bearing. just crawl under the truck
and see how much play is in the rubber mount by moving
the ds back and forth. should be minimal movement.

Just an update, the u-joint at the tail of the transmission is shot. The yoke at the end of the transmission doesn't move but the drive shaft moves about half an inch. They don't look very good so I'll definitely be replacing the u joints and that center bearing. I think that should take care of the vibration and the clunk noise. Thank you guys! Definitely lead me to the right direction. First time user of this forum and definitely glad I joined!

glad you got it sorted. i removed all of the u joints myself,
then took it to a truck driveline shop to do the rebuild and
balance. ran my ~$300. i didn't want to hassle with pressing
the carrier bearing off and the new one back on :)

Nice! That's not bad price at all! I agree, feel like there is something else is going on. I'm definitely going to try and remove the drive shaft tomorrow. I know the the u joint has to get replaced, it looks very bad..... What else could cause the the truck not to accelerate llike it did?... It wasn't very cold either. Around 50 degrees. Yesterday morning was the only day I had that acceleration problem

There's alot going wrong in that trans. FYI, the 4R100 isnt the weak link at all on these. Many sled pullers and drag racers use this trans. The problem is the tiny cooler Ford thought they could get away with. Heat wipes out the converter, then converter material wipes out the clutches in the trans.

If you are going WOT and cant get to 30mph, clutches are about toast.

If you want a solid built trans, shoot me an email.
