I have just read this legislative update from the BAR and it states that starting 2010 all diesel vehicles up to gvwr of 8500 lbs will be subject to biennial smog checks. This includes a visual inspection and a tail pipe inspection.

It also states that "it also allows for testing of diesel vehicles up to 13999 gvwr provided test procedures can be developed by CAR board and BAR."

well thats just plain dumb lol.... if all else fails ill have my truck registered out of state
Some states are now passing legislation to address registering vehicle else where. Colorado made it a class 6 felony to falsify vehicle registation, ie, registering it to avoid emmissions regulations in the county where you reside. Check your state laws first.
