Hello-
First off, I’ve never been on any type of auto forum before, but I’m in desperate need of advice. I’m not sure I’m even posting in the right spot. My husband would normally be the one to handle this type of inquiry but he is swamped at work. So here I am, trying to solve our problem.
A year ago we purchased a 2006 Ford F-250 diesel with 163,000 for $14,000.00 from a private party on FB classifieds. The seller reported it was in excellent condition and he had just had it gone through top to bottom at his local diesel shop and it was a okay.
We knew buying this truck we would want to “bulletproof” it, and a week after purchasing it we took it to a local diesel shop to get started. 20 min into the appointment the mechanic calls to tell us we have a blown head gasket. He then proceeded to tell us that it was likely the seller knew about the blown head gasket because the engine was full of leak stop. We decided the best course of action was to purchase a rebuilt engine and have it replaced. We ordered the engine and paid in full in Aug 2021 from a mechanic in Delaware and still after almost a year the diesel shop has not shipped the engine. We have tried to get ahold of that mechanic to just cancel the order and refund our money because our patience has run out. My question to the forum is, would you purchase a 2006 Ford F-250 diesel with 163,000 knowing it had a blown head gasket and the motor would need to be replaced?
Or is it worth our time, money, effort yo replace the motor? Honestly I don’t even want to LOOK at this stupid truck anymore, and would rather have it gone. So even if we did replace the motor we would likely sell it, because I’m petty like that. Please let me know what you think, kindly.
Thank you!

Something attracted you both to the truck from the beginning of your purchase. Yes, the 6.0s and the 6.4s have been plagued from their birth. Some have had good results with bullet proofing. Others, not so much. And some others, have taken to retrofitting with a Cummins engine. If you "rid'' yourself of it now, you will loose much of your investment. It would really depend on what condition the rest of the truck is in. Mechanically, suspension, and body. That should tell you your course of action. New trucks are outrageous, and used are also well overpriced.

Just as @96coal449 replied, depends what kind of shape the rest of the truck is in. If its a7,8,or 9 out of 10 and you sink another $10/12K you will have 25k in it. which in this market with a 8 scale body and 1k mileage motor is not a bad deal.
But you will need to do your homework to find a shop that knows the 6.0.
I would ask the current shop where he is getting your short or long block from and give them a call and see if it has even been ordered. Pretty much everything is back ordered these days. But if you feel you are being taken advantage of, do more research and ask more questions.
Good luck and keep us posted.

With most engines, It’s cheaper to do the head repair than replace the engine. However, many folks choose to go with a new engine because at least they gain something out of what is an expensive ordeal either way. It sounds like you will wind-up with a nice unit once you’re done so I don’t quite understand your reasoning in wanting to sell. Usually the owner will decide to keep the truck if they’re replacing the engine because it seldom makes much financial sense not to to keep it. Maybe the current strong truck market will forgive a decision to replace the engine and immediately sell, but maybe not.

As for the engine order and as others have mentioned, I would call several places and see if you can determine the real story on the order delivery time. Never good to pay 100% cost upfront.

you sound like a strong, level headed woman, your husband is a lucky man.

would you purchase a 2006 Ford F-250 diesel with 163,000 knowing it had a blown head gasket and the motor would need to be replaced?
Could you sell it with the blow motor, yes.

Should you sell it with the blown motor, yes.

My question back to you is, can you afford to take the loss?
