Ok guys, I'm brand new here, so be gentle.
Im also kinda new to the diesel scene (except for my kubota and a VW back in the 90's)

I'm looking to get get out of my 06 Tundra so that I can tow a toy hauler.
I've come across a local 08 f250 lariat with what I'm being told is a bad rod bearing. It has aprox 176k on the truck.

I figure on a long block from blackwater or perfmancemfg. But what do I use from this 175k engine? Turbos? Fuel rails? Tranny? Etc?

Now is the time to do the fancy upgrades, but money is not limitless.

What does everyone think?

I will have to decide pretty soon cause this truck isn't gonna last too long before someone with a little more power stroke knowledge than me stumbles upon it.

I should have said I was dumping it for a 6L. That would have gotten some replies.

Maybe the ppl who viewed have no good input. What would you rather have? Just junk replies or actual info?

Anyway, I don't see why you need a whole new block. But, then again, I've never rebuilt a motor.
I'd think just tear it down to what you need to replace and fix the broken stuff.

from looking at the blackwater site you need to reuse: injectors, fuel rails, high pressure fuel pump, oil pan, turbos, oil cooler. and of course intake, wiring harness, fuel and oil filter housing, and pulleys, front engine accessories. normal stuff. i know its about 11-14k for a long block from ford with almost everything. except for front accessories.

Thanks guys. So with 158k, would you reuse those parts, or spend the $8 grand extra for a new crate from ford?
I know diesels are supposed to last "forever" but is forever more than 158k on injectors?

its up to you, i would go with the complete from ford because it comes with pretty much everything and it will have i believe a 2 year unlimited mile warranty on the whole complete engine.

Tons more. Do some reading on how many miles some of these engines have.
But why would you buy a motor and then spend time to swap over parts? Why not just tear it down and fix it if you're going to be that far into it?

Another great point.
See these are the things I'm not thinking about. I just hear how a blown psd engine is $ 8-14k. And I figure a rod bearing and a knock like it has mean the upper end of that spectrum.
So even with the common 6.4issues, you guys would still use the stock 158k parts and just fix the rod bearings?
Any ideas of what I should expect to pay to have that done?

if your just looking at doing the rod bearings make sure the crank is scored.

I may be giving up on the idea of fixing this truck.

I was told by a local diesel mechanic that I should run away as fast as I can.

He said find a 7.3 or a 6.7 truck and be happy. He said the 6.4 has been just as bad as the 6.0

He also said consider a cummins engine for the ford.

Is that a nightmare waiting to happen? I'm not looking for a project truck, just one to fix (hopefully once) and be on my merry way. Like with my tundra.

The guy is dumb. both those motors are great, just fix the dumb add ons and you're good

I made my Samsung SGH-I997 send this.
