i have a 2000 f350 supercab 60" from CA. i need at least 120" for a rollback bed. I'm a welding student and passed hydraulic bend test with no cracks on 3/8" steel open root v groove vertical and overhead . so the frame on truck shouldn't be a problem. I was just going to cut it straight down and splice in the extra rails and then glove it.

Do i have to glove it just at the ends where cut? how much overlap?? or do i have to get like a 84" section to glove it down the whole piece??

I'm a welder and I've extended truck frames before. Not familiar with the term "glove it", but I assume you mean a fishplate or a reinforcing frame section. If possible, the glove should be one continuous piece and overlap the welds by at least 24 inches or more if you can get it. Also, do the welding with 11018 rod, not 7018. Good luck.

thanks. yes i by "glove it" was to put a smalled piece of channel in the inside of rail. overlap 2 feet on each side. i don't know if that's possible. Only rod i ever used was 7018 with a 6010 first pass. What's wrong with mig?? I'm new at this.

ER70s-6 or ER80s-6 wire in a mig should be fine. Yes fish plate both sides if you can. I'm not sure if the frame is heat treated or not, you may have to post heat for stress relief. I would fish plate both sides and get some flat plate and weld across the channel and box the frame where ever you can. There are about 1/2 dozen ways to get where your going and anyone is just as good as the other. The point is use lots of heavy steel and solid well planned welds. Keep everything clean so there are no issues with Hydrogen cracking etc.. GOOD LUCK.

Another thing to think about is z.ing your frame when you cut it. You will have more weld area if you do. Kinda like this

Dont know why the top | line is going all of the way over, but hopefully you get the idea
