need help on the fuel pressure regulator

I have a 2002 7.3. I started to do the bb trick to the FPR and i noticed a part of the instructions that gets pretty vague. It says to simply put a bb behind the spring. Do you put the bb on the side closest to the fuel bowl or the side closest to the line connecting to the regulator? Hopefully someone is awake with an answer. - Thanks
