I am new to the community as well as a new 6.0 owner. My truck has a slow oil leak (not exactly sure from where) and after looking around I noticed this and have no clue what it is or why it's missing bolts. Can someone please point me in the right direction or educate me please. Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know why but I can tell you that my starter stopped working with about 125K on the clock. I went to Fisher Parts and purchased a reman. When I crawled up under the truck I found the starter barely in it's place with only a few threads on one bolt and the electrical connections keeping it in the the truck. 2 bolts gone. I had to purchase new bolts at the Ford dealer. The catch was that they only came in packs of 5. 2 different bolts x 5 was a FRIGGIN TON OF MONEY!! I can't remember the exact cost but it was in $100 neighborhood!! Never figured out why. never had additional problems. AND! I still have 8 bolts in my stuff somewhere. Probably in that same place we all have.

My truck seems to seep somewhere along the rear of the motor, resulting in a wet bellhousing and a film over the starter. As for the missing bolts that's super sketchy. Not sure why you need OE bolts? Can you not find the thread size and use a nice grade 8?

It's common for people to upgrade to the 6.4 starter and I also heard people putting on the 6.7 starter for faster starting. I think the 6.7 starter has one bolt that doesn't line up, but it still works. From the picture, either your starter was coming off, or someone put a different starter on it. The oil could be coming from the rear main seal. If it bothers you, you're talking about removing the transmission to get to it. Not the worst job, but probably not the easiest to do in a drive way. If it's not leaking real bad, I would run it. For the bolts, just snatch some bolts from a truck at a junk yard.

Here is the bolt sizes. Found it on here somewhere.

2-m8x1.25 40mm w/ a 13 mm head (top two) - grade 8
1-m12x1.75 40mm - grade 8 - can't recall the head size.

The "up grade" starters only fasten with 2 bolts -- the other hole does not line up

That may be true for the 6.7 but in my experience the 6.4 starters line up just fine. Mine have always had 3 bolts.

I agree with both the gentleman above, all three on mine line up.

Thanks for everyone's replies and input, it helps tremendously. In case anyone is curious, I will post my findings with some pictures after I inspect further with my newly equipped knowledge.
