So I'm on my way home from work in Gaithersburg, MD. I'm on the outer loop of the capital beltway and I'm about an 1/8 mile away from the Amercian Legion bridge(this spans the Potomac River that seperates VA. from MD.) All of a sudden on the bridge in front of me I see sparks spraying all over the place like crazy , then a boat trailer(with no boat on it, mind you) comes flying across, yeah FLYING across all 4 lanes of traffic at about 60 mph, hits the outside wall of the bridge, and then comes flying back across all 4 lanes again in the opposite direction.
Traffic slowed and crept by on the right as everything came to rest in the left lane again.
I was the only one to stop and offer help.
I pulled up behind the boat. The boat was behind the guys truck, on the pavement, and the boat trailer was in front of the guys truck. His wife was in the truck so she called 911 and I helped him clean up the highway a little. There were tie-down straps, trailer fenders, and all kinds of crap all over. After that was done, I hook my chain(always have one) to the front of his boat and dragged it out of the other lane of traffic so people could get by.
The guy had a pretty good sense of humor about it considering....We laughed about wether or not we should just try and push it over the edge of the bridge into the Potomac or not. :hehe: Its hard to tell, but the boat is TOAST. He was taking it down to NC where he just finished building a house, and that was going to be where the boat stayed. Not anymore
Bad news for him, but the good news is that somehow by the Grace of God, nobody was hurt. This could've been a real bad disaster. Especially being that it happened on a bridge too. That trailer was going so fast when crossed all the lanes, and then all the way back, It's amazing that it didn't hit anything or anyone.

Pretty crazy ride home.

Anyway, since....

IDK how.

Operator error i'm guessing :hehe:

I think the guy probably forgot to latch the trailer onto the ball, hit a big bump(they are paving that section of the beltway) and the trailer tounge jumped off the ball. That would explain all of the sparks I saw. Then he either didn't have the saftey chains hooked or they broke. I don't know which.

To hear him tell it, he says to me..."I don't know what happened. My boat passed me and my trailer exploded!"

I am so glad no one got hurt. Not trying to bash this particular guy, BUT...

This, IMHO, is further proof that you should have to have an endorsement on your license to pull a trailer of ANY size. Just I have seen a LOT of wrecks with trailers around here lately it was almost always caused by head up the arse, don;t know how to operate a vehicle while towing.... Had an exchange student from Japan I believe traveling near my in-laws house with a U-haul, traailer got away from him, Father-in-law responded as police, said rice was EVERYWHERE! lol (no joke)

Thanks for stopping and helping him out. Probably felt like a boob for losing the trailer, but a worse feeling when traffic goes whizzing by and nobody cares or stops to help.

For him, Thank you.

I agree.....:thumb: I lost a refrigerator out of my truck, home depot wouldn't lay it down or strap it, so I did, but they left it on the pallet "bolted down"! It wasn't. I hit a small bump doing 30 It it jumped OVER my tailgate & onto the highway, in heavy traffic!! Everyone was trying to pass me cuz I was creeping, & luckily no one hit this thing! BUT, NOT 1 person stopped, at 1st! THen 2 other women stopped & helped me drag it off the freeway. I called some friends, we put it in the truck & returned to Home Depot & shoved it out in front of the door, the manager gave my mom's $$ back & we went & purchased 1 somewhere else.
I was appalled NO ONE would stop!! People need to start helping others as u did!!

I also agree that there should be a stamp or ? on your license that you passed trailering 101! I've seen idiots launch boats with THE TRAILER ATTACHED!! "no one told me to take the boat off" wtf:crazy: People assume EVERYONE has common sense...........THEY DON'T!!!

I just sold a travel trailer & they guy asked what I was doing with the chain, uhhh, putting the saftey chain on. Thank GOD I did it, cuz it ended up he got the wrong ball size & I noticed when attaching the chain & made him go get the right size. Scary part, he's hauling this thing to Pittsburg in a few months, so watch out!!!
GREAT PICS!!! btw:thumb:

No thanks needed.
I was just doing what I would want others to do for me.
You're right though, there is not enough of that these days. I'm just glad noone was hurt too.

I'm all over the place really. I work anywhere from Baltimore to Charlottesville. I do go through Mont. county pretty often. Right now I am remodeling the Giant on Goshen rd in Gaithersburg. You might see me on 270. I guess our shifts are opposite though.

It aint funny when it happens ,but I laugh about how it happened afterward.I was pulling a trailer behind a motorcycle on a shakedown ride after the winter was over.I had adjusted the coupler so that it wouldnt rattle, put a bolt on the pin, tightened the ball ,and hooked up the safety chains and went on a 10 mile interstate ride. As I neared the exit ramp on my return trip,I felt a jolt, slowed down to see whats up and watched my trailer pass me on the right going 65 MPH. The amazeing thing was watching the cars pass it because it was going too slow !!!
I pulled over off the highway and watched it travel up the interstate for about 2000 feet,
showering sparks off the tongue and eventually crossing all three lanes. When it slowed down to about 15mph the hitch snagged then the trailer did a full 360 degree forward somersault and landed hard on both wheels. All the while ,I watched people drive close to it and around it. When it finally came to rest,I thought for sure my one year old camper trailer was trashed.
An up close look told me what happened pretty quick. The tongue had seized on the ball and actually wrenched the ball loose then finally the nut dropped off. The trailer chains provided by the manufacturer were too cheap and they broke immediately. The only damage to the trailer was underneath on a spring support from landing so hard.....a simple fix. The ball's threaded shaft had lost about an inch in length from grindeing itself on the highway.
Still ,to this day I am amazed not by how the trailer survived ,but how rageing stupid people were as they drove around the driverless vehicle hauling arse down the interstate. No one stopped....and fortunately no cops were around...i towed it home on the shoulder of the road for about a mile.
note : the lock washer under the nut made no differance. Now, when ever possible ,I drill the shaft and use a pin or I use a locknut on all trailer ball shafts.(slows down theft as a side benefit)

Wow thats a  story too Steve!
I see how it could happen. I didn't even remember to look at the back of his truck to see what was left on there. I was too busy avoiding the speeding idiots too. Maybe the same thing happened to him, I don't even know
You're very lucky you weren't hurt badly, especially since it happened to you on motorcycle. It's amazing how oblivious, rude, ignorant, selfish, etc... people can be sometimes.

When I wrecked my truck on an icy bridge in November during our first ice storm, there were 6 cars behind me and not one stopped. They all just went around me. I was kinda pissed at that myself. I won't stop if I see someone broke down on the side of the road but if I were to see someone wreck in front of me, I would definitely stop.
