I just did an oil change on my 17 f350. 62k on the clock. I put 13 qts in but only got 10 out! (I pour old oil back into the empty jugs)
Truck runs and drives fine. Last oil change was about 10k miles ago. (I use the oil minder to tell me when to change oil). No oil leaking that I can see, no drips on the driveway. This was only my second oil change since I got the truck in April. Any thoughts on where I should look or what may be the cause?

When I changed oil on my old 14 F350, I was usually only half a quart less than what I put in.

I would think between a little vaporization, and the fact that a lot of oil hides up in that engine, 3 q is not much to miss.

Seems like a lot to me. That’s about 25%

There's going to be a tad sucked up by the oil filter element. I've never worried about what amount "drains" out of the pan although I use a 3 gallon jug. So as long as it's close to the top I'm good.

Are you overfilling the containers?? What oil are you using??

Well the directions give 13qts with a dry filter. So you are going to loose some to the filter element. Even then you seem to be "loosing" 2.5 qts. I figured you were using the old containers some are marked pretty good for QTs on the side.

Without much other discussion about how much is drained, how you are collecting, how you are measuring..etc etc etc...I'd say maybe it's getting blow by burning off in the exhaust?? Maybe it's driving style causing the excessive blow by?? Do you have frequent regens?? I'd guess you do oil changes when the motor is cold or when cooled off after running at normal temps?? Just throwing out questions...

Did not check it before. Afterward it was actually a little high, so I drained about 1/2 quart. (I have a fumoto valve)

I think the only way you’ll know if you’re losing oil is by checking the dipstick at least every 1000 miles.

13 quarts shouldn’t of left it high enough to require draining excess. Has anyone ever pulled a Fumoto after draining the pan to see how much more oil comes out? There has to be some extra left in the pan due to the valve’s smaller ID.
