Life Expectancy of a Reman HPOP

4 years ago I had a HPOP replaced. Couple of weeks ago I had taken the truck in for issues I was having with engine light coming on and engine dying at low speed/RPM. I also was having issues with hard restart when warm. Instead of me trying to explain everything, I'm attaching the repair orders from 4 yrs ago and the other recent one. This last time in the shop, what it comes down to is they (the shop) is telling me I need another HPOP. Shouldnt they last longer than 4 yrs, even a reman?

Thanks in advance for input.

I agree with you. And in theory, a reman should be fine, but that is not what we are seeing in the industry. The level of failures seen should be criminal. Not specifically with HPOPs, just reman parts in general. It is depressing.

Thank you. When I get to that point I will make some calls and look at those two shops to make a decision.

The truck (2003 CC 4x4)

Don't waste money on the 2003 6.0 version. There were some good changes made to the heads, 2004.5 all the way to the early 2006. Late 2006 to 2007 20mm heads/block are even better. The most recent 6.0 I built was a 2007 (20mm heads) I put in my early 2006 truck. The 2003 heads have many differences from later heads. Especially the 20mm heads and many parts will not interchange. Read about the differences in this great publication courtesy of the fine people at Powerstroke.org:

Well, I already have the 2003 with a motor with no problems other than the failed lifter. The cost to upgrade to newer heads would be beyond my budget. I still believe that with my remote oil cooler setup, EGR delete, studs, and very good maintenance, this motor may outlive me. It is not a daily driven truck, and when pulling it will pull light loads compared to what it is capable of. I will be surprised if I put 5,000 miles a year on the truck. I will not be installing any "power adders" like programs, etc., either. The head gaskets are original and not leaking, so a cleanup like "too many toys" details in his videos should be all it needs (plus the cam/lifters/LPOP/related parts). It even has new Ford injectors and glow plugs already in it. Even if it only lasts 100k miles, that is 20 years of use for me.
A lifter failure in these engines can destroy the front cover (cracking it) along with the LPOP. Your engine also uses a different front cover than the later engines. Is the engine pulled already?

Definitely the front cover upgrade that enables the 100mm water pump is a good upgrade if you don't have it already.

As far as the upgrade of an 03 engine to the 05+ HPOP, or the upgrade to the later year heads, I think a simple upgrade to one of the two previously discussed HPOPs would be just fine for reliability.

There are some scars in the front cover from when the needles went through the LPOP. They are minor, but to the average mechanic it would make the front cover junk. I will heiliarc them up and flycut it smooth again. No other damage. (I have a machine shop so this is not an issue). I am also going to weld up the coolant feed to the oil cooler/EGR as that is no longer needed. At the time I looked, I could not even find a front cover for sale. Might be different now.

Great that you have a machine shop. That's a huge deal you can do all the work yourself. Is the engine out or cab up?

Engine out. I built a rolling table that it is sitting on right now. Sadly, I have not had a chance to start tearing it down yet, but I am getting close to beginning the project. I would like to have the truck running by summer.
