I decided I'd share an experience I had over thanksgiving with y'all just in case someone els ends up doing it. Let me just start off by saying that i have always thought there was no way, no how i could ever do this, but i did.

I was on my way from south TX up to the DFW area for the thanksgiving and decided to pull into a HEB in Waco to fill up with diesel. All the pumps were full so i pulled around and waited behind a gas pump at the end of the row of pumps. At this particular pump there was a completely separate pump that i assumed was the diesel pump. so when the car left in front of me i pulled up, got out, stuck the card in and started pumping. I left the truck running, as it was 35ish degrees and lightly raining, and i usually do anyway. i had my dog with me and hadn't stopped since we left so i let him out. he did his thing and we went back to the truck and about the time i closed the back door the pumped clicked off. went to pull the nozzle out and thats when i noticed it. it was a small nozzle. first thought was "no f-ing way". turned around to hang the nozzle up and it was E85. i dang near had a heart attack. quickly i jumped in and put it in reverse and just let it idle back into a parking spot no more than 30 feet away. right as i got into the spot the motor started to clack and thats when i shut it down. sitting there thinking what the f am i gonna do, I knew i would need to somehow drain the 20 something gallons of shìt out of my tank and change my fuel filters. call it luck, but there was an Oreilly's right there. went over and got some fuel filters and some DK fuel lube, and a diesel can. came back and started to think how i was gonna drain the tank. thats when i remembered that if you dont crack the fuel bowl loose under the cab before you pull out the yellow drain plug, it'll continue to drain out the fuel, so thats what i did. after about 45min, it started to drain real slow. i figured to flush out the last 3-5 gallons the fuel system wont pick up out of the bottom of the tank i would put 5 gallons of diesel in 3-4 times and drain it each time. wishing i had my aux air line/tank hooked up to my ride right system, i could speed up the process by pressurizing the tank. well i ended up finding a small funnel in my toolbox and some scotts towels, so i stuck the funnel through the middle of a towel and then stuck that in the filler neck (towel acted as a gasket between funnel and filler neck) and started blowing. by god it worked. and im sure everyone that saw me doing all this was wondering what in the heck this guy was doing. finally got to the point that i felt i had flushed the tank enough and it was time to go ahead and change the fuel filters. i specifically bought a 1-14" socket (i think it is) and breaker bar to keep in my toolbox just for changing the lower filter, so thats what i was using. also, i would like to remind y'all, its dãmn near freezing, raining, and by now its about 11:30 on a sunday night. well i got the fuel bowl off and switched out the filters and rubbers. screwed the bowl back on by hand, went to tighten the bowl the rest of the way with the socket and SNAP!!!! The dãmn plastic nut broke off the bottom of the fuel bowl. well f***. im done, theres no hope now of fixing my truck tonight. i layered up on cloths, climbed in the truck with ol duke and tried to sleep it off till morning. but ill tell you what, that was one of the coldest nights ive ever had.

that next morning my dad came from DFW to tow me to the ford house there in waco. told them the story and they suggested that i let them drop and clean the tank and back flush the fuel system just to be safe. sounded good to me. the tech called me the following day and said my truck was running good and i had caught it in time before it did any damage. outstanding. id rather spend $500 that i have than $10k that i dont for a new fuel system. cause when i picked my truck up, there was another 6.7 in the bay next to mine that did the same thing but his cab was lifted above the rest of his truck.

ive put almost 1k miles on since i did that and still running fine. and i know some of yall are thinking, "well maybe you should have paid more attention". and you're right. also, i know that diesel nozzles are green, and this one was yellow. but in my defense on that is that there is a gas station that uses yellow handles for their diesel pumps, i think its either valero or shell, but i have seen and used a yellow diesel nozzle somewhere. but still, i should have paid more attention to the pump. i have always wondered how someone could put gas in their diesel, but now i know lol

Man that sucks!! Our local station has green pump handles for gas and black for diesel, *** backwards!

Funny similar story, I was at a weekend corvette bash in bowling green a few years ago, and a guy in a brand new C6 Z06 was filling it up with diesel. I pulled up behind him in my Z, got out and noticed, he was looking at my car, and I said, hey your putting diesel in that!! He acted like an *** over it, so I just filled up and left.

For a while, I drove a 94 Saturn back and forth to work just to save fuel and miles off my truck. The first time I stopped to put gas in the car, I found myself trying to jam the diesel nozzle in it.:hehe::hehe:

Glad you got off cheap...
I fear for my wife doing that as she drives my truck sometimes while I am at work and we have never owned a diesel:please:

It happens...

I've known two people, one who put gas in the diesel tank like yourself, and one who put diesel in the DEF tank. Sh!t, I've driven off with the pump still attached and yanked it apart twice! Although, that was back in the day when I used to get stoned. :nutkick:

Very comforting knowing that there are still a few honest people in this world:roll1:

It's Valero that has the yellow diesel handles. Pisses me off BC the E85 has yellow handles too.

Glad you were able to get it fixed without spending a ton of money. Luckily i only use two gas stations and out of the 12 pumps at each only the 2 on the ends have diesel so i always know where to go. Problem with that is I live in an area that has almost equal number of diesel trucks to gas so its a PITA to get fuel sometimes waiting for 5 trucks to fill before you. The other day i had to get gas for the quad and forgot what i was there for and found myself waiting for the diesel pump to open haha

Easiest way to avoid the problem, if one is near you, pump in the 18 wheeler section of the truck stop. No gassers allowed there.

Good point, however, remember the flow rate is twice as much and very easy to overflow! I do like using the 18 wheeler pumps with my little Diesel!

was on a motorcycle ride with a group of guys a few years ago... Dude pulled up on his road king and put diesel in it. Bike was sputtering bad before we left parking lot and that is when he discovered what he did.
Drained the tank and filled up with gas and all was well. He got lucky

Especially considering it was a H-D.:D I have had 4 Harley's ranging from old to new, the last one being a '13 FLSTC Heritage and all I can say is never again. I don't think the quality will ever be close to the asking price, your paying for that bar and shield and that's it. To each their own though and in the end, the person making the payments has the final say. cheers!

I had a similar incident happen to me a few years back with my '97 only it was at a full service station and the attendant was the one that put gas in my 7.3. I drove it a few miles before I realized what she had done. luckily I still had 1/2 a tank of diesel left before she filled me up. I called my dealer and the service manager said if I could find some regular motor oil to add to the tank it should be ok to drive it, but I didn't take the chance. I had it roll backed to the dealer to have the tank drained and filters changed, at the service stations expense of course. I was worried about the fuel pump because I did end up driving it about 10 miles, but no damage was done.

"Someone I know" had this done to them at a remote convenience store/gas station in his '02 7.3. He was on his way to hunting camp, was already packing about 40 gallons in his auxiliary tank, and wanted to top the truck off to make sure he didn't have to come out early for fuel. The attendant put about 10 gallons in while the man was in the store. He got about 15 miles down the road before the truck started bucking like a rented mule. He pumped about 10-15 gallons in the tank to flush out as much gas as he could and then opened the water drain on the filter for a bit. He started it up and it ran a bit rough for about 5 miles and then cleared up. Just goes to show how much the 7.3 can take sometimes.
