Ok I posted a few other threads tryin to figure this out. Here are my signs. Engine cutting out or stalling for up to one sec at highway speeds, and while doin so sendin black smoke out the stacks. Reservior 2 gallons low after two months and after running down the highway for 20 minutes my reservior is super hot and over more than 16lbs of pressure. And last but not least coolant all along the bottom drivers side of the underbody... These are my symptoms. No lights on the dash are on and nothing is running off pressure or hot. Is my factory powertrain warranty up. I got a 03 with 48000. Wasn't sure and how do I check my egr cooler if it is bad??? Thanks for any help This is my ride so kinda an emergency. I just don't wana replace the wrong part. Thanks

For starters, yes your warranty is expired, UNLESS it wasnt sold until late 04, which I doubt.

If its smoking black, the EGR valve could be gummed up or it could have failed, also it could be the veins on the turbo sticking, any of those can cause black smoke at highway speeds.

Start by pulling the EGR valve, if its all nasty, clean it up, also look for puddles of coolant in the intake manifold, coolant inside the manifold is a sure fire sign of EGR cooler failure, but most of the time you will be getting white smoke out the tail pipe.

Also you can replace the cap on the degas bottle, once the truck pukes one time, the spring is ruined and it wont function properly anymore. That bottle will always be very hot. Make sure you keep the coolant level at the MIN line not the MAX line.

Hope this stuff helps.

Thanks I will try all of that. When the degas pikes how bad is it usually? Enough to cover the entire bottom of my crew cab shortbed?
