The easy upgrades are as follows:

Head studs, turbo, new injectors and IP properly timed. You can also get a torque grind cam, and some other goodies, but thats getting in depth.

Smoke? Yes, leave it N/A (no turbo), crank the fuel up. But you can melt your motor down...and honestly it gets annoying after a while.

they have a cam for the 6.9?

Yup. Its a custom grind developed back when all the logging companies in the NW used IDI's. Helps the bottom end a lot.

i may have to look into that. i'm doing a complete rebuild of my motor and putting headstuds and and ceramic coated pistons in.
