How To: Chrome to Black Mirrors

6550 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  CM250
Hey guys, I am wanting to change my chrome tow mirrors to black. Its on a 2012 F250 Lariat. I know painting chrome is tricky. I heard it was not a cap but it was a whole piece. Anyone know for sure? Does anyone have tips for painting if it is not a cap?

Mine just had chrome caps on it, you can pop them off with a screw driver. Point the mirror all the way down and you can get in there to pop them off and get some PTM ones
Agreed

the chrome is a biotch to try and paint because it's hard to scuff up enough to have paint bond to
I will buy the chrome caps if you end up taking them off

If u wana trade let me know!!! I want to get rid of my chrome caps also!
I have a '12 with 1200 miles on it, powerscope/fold and signal all black. Mint condition. If you have chrome caps and your mirrors are mint (and I mean no chips etc on the chrome), I'd love to swap. Send me a PM!
Just buy the cap and swap it out, you can swap them.
My passenger cap is scuffed up and chipped from a swipe, I dont think anyone would want them. Thanks for all the input though, I will try to find some black caps.
Plastidip!.... Its like paint, but not. If you want to go back to chrome heat it up and peel it off. I sprayed my chrome grill,front-rear bumpers, and badges flat black... The truck turned out sick and its way cheaper. Also i have had it through more then a dozen high pressure carwashes

My brother in law was talking about that the other day. He wasnt sure what all was involved. About how much did that cost you for bumpers or total for all pieces?
U don't need to heat it up to pull it off really. No prep work involved besides a good clean surface. My buddy has a lariat f150 with tan at the bottom. We did the front and rear bumpers and down the side and fender flares on his truck last fall and it still looks great with none peeling. It's $5.99 a can at home depot. We used one can to do the rear bumper and the bumper pad on the front. U could easily do the mirror caps and rear bumper with one can. I think we used 4 cans to do his entire truck.

Can you paint over the plasti dip? and is it smooth or textured? I was just wanting a stock look with black mirror caps and color match bumpers (adobe) but was seeing if there was a way to acheieve that look without alot of $$$$ atleast for a little while until I got some to put towards color match ranch hands.
