I drained and filled my coolant. I didn't flush so there is still some old coolant in there. How long until everything mixed together so I can test the sca levels? I can't tell for certain but it doesn't seem to be much movement in the overflow/degas bottle. My second to last gallon was distilled water which flowed into the radiator and my last was pure coolant (I didn't premix before pouring in) with a bottle of napa cool. The overflow is still bright green so I don't know if it's circulating to the overflow or if it just pulls from the overflow when needed. I put about 20-30 miles since the drain and fill. The idiot-temp guage reads fine even in the Savannah heat.

What coolant did you have and what coolant are you using now? Generally, green coolant should never be used. Changing coolants without a full flush is a bad idea, as certain types mix together to form a gel which will destroy your cooling system over time.

The reservoir does circulate through, although it's slow. The small black hose that connects to the top side of the tank is the return and it trickles back through that

The standard green coolant which was stock on the 7.3. I didn't mix types. It was green before.

When I installed my coolant filter I drilled and tapped an 1/8" FPT hole above the black-hose nipple and the filter returns to the bottle. So my system has more circulation through the degas bottle than a stock set-up does.

I drive mine about a week before I test. There's no real hurry, I wait until its been driven several warm up cycles so I know it's well-mixed. I bought a bottle of 25 test strips a few years ago. I keep them behind the seat with a pair of medical forceps taped to the bottle to use to suspend the strip in the degass bottle. I check the coolant every oil change which is about once a year. I haven't had to mess with the SCA or coolant for about 5 years now. the strips have an expiration date, but they still seem to function for me even though mine are about 2 years out of date.

Where did the "don't use green" come from? That's what was in the 7.3's when new. If that's all that has ever been in it, why would not flushing or continuing to use green be a problem? The test strips tell you freeze protection level too, which is a function of the water to coolant ratio.

Thanks daveP. I'll give it a week or 2. I'm not sure where that dude got his antigreen coolant. Maybe he thought he was in one of the other forums.
