I have the manual in my truck, and I only have 3,000 miles on it, mainly because in the 4 months I've had it, a dealer has had it 56 days. Top that with it should be in there right now because it is hard to get into the lower gears and R, but I have work that needs to be done, so I'm driving it...just limited to 10K or it becomes a safety thing not going into gear when pulling out into traffic!!

This is my first Ford and it has been nothing but problems. But I am letting Ford replace this with a new truck, although a 350 this time. Isn't the manual the same that Chevy had mated up to the DMax. My last truck was a 6 sp w/ Dmax and the shift pattern was the same (this new style w/ R to the left and up) and I had zero problems with it. Am I having problems because the manual is in a 450? They have even repaced it once and there is no change. And the clutch was SHOT at 750 miles (burned, warped, rusted, you name it).

My dealer is trying to get me to go with an auto, because they are like the Allison in that they are bulletproof, but I don't like autos.

Can you guys with hand shakers give me a warm fuzzy that the tranny is a good one and that I just have the only tranny with problems. I know that we also get better fuel economy also, so I want to keep what measly MPG that I get.
Thanks for the help,
:dunno:

I had a ZF6 in my 2000 and it was great. Never a problem one out of it. had over 110k when I traded it. Very strong tranny. It sounds like they don't have something lined up right or something. Mine was very smooth as has all of the ones I have driven. They have been using that tranny since 99, and I don't think they have had to change it all that much. They may have done something different in the 08s, but upto 07 I think they were all the same. Good luck with it and sorry to hear about your troubles.

Stay with the handshaker. I love mine, it is so nice to be in the woods and drop it in to low and crawl. Or when pulling a trailer and I let the clutch out you can feel the motor wanting to roll. One thing to remember these are not a car transmission, they are a heavy duty trans so they are not syncronized as well. That is why it sometimes feels like it does not want to go in low or reverse. Just put it in another gear slip the clutch and it will line up the syncros and it will go in the gear you want.

power junkie,
Yeah I know that these are HD units, but this not being able to get in to gear is also while I'm trying move away from the stop light. Shifting from L to 1, and 1 to 2 is nigh unto impossible to accomplish with a trailer. It is especially bad after coming to a stop, but also a lot of times, just before I am at a complete stop ,the light changes and I can't force it into 1 or 2.
This is the second ZF6 that I have had, and the 9th manual truck, and I have never had this. I drove dump and semi tractor for several years and so I have even tried double-clutching.....no go.

, Ok, I wasn't trying to sound like an azz, but as you know there are alot people out there who buy a pickup and think it will drive like a car. It sounds like that you do have some problems with it and I hope they get figured out.:thumb:

I've had 2 zf6's and have never had a problem with either. Current one has 203K on the clock (besides a clutch) no problems out of it at all. empty/loaded/ or trailer she works great.

I have the ZF6 in my truck with 92K miles on is right now. I love it. Even the abnoxious noises that come out of it at idle RPMs ... those are actually my favorite part. LoL.

So it really sounds like I got a bad one. I am really partial to these, so I may amend my order for the replacement truck and go with the manual.
Still looking for more guys that have the 6 sp w/ the 6.4 and 3.73's. The 4.30's really make this 450 a screamer at 60 (2200 RPM) and you are always looking for one more gear, so I'd like to hear from some of you guys.

Josh,
The only reason it looked good was because it was stopped. As soon as I tried to shift into 2, the stupid thing was a bit** to get into.

I've got a '96 with a five speed so I'm sure its different from yours but it sounds like the clutch isn't disengageing all the way either from a bad clutch or slave cylinder. My only other guess would be that the transmission gets hot and thats causing it to not go in gear. That just my 2 cents though. Hope you get it figured out!!

I was told I couldn't get it!! I argued and argued, and the dealer told me that Ford didn't offer the manual in the F250 Superduty ('08). So, I left to
look at the Dodge's and Chevy's. I could get one in the Dodge, but not the Chevy. Thought about it, then came back to the Ford.

Now I'm learning I've been had? :dunno: :ranton::censored::censored::nate:
