We are on vacation in Breckenridge Co. While climbing a steep grade at 35mph and less our 2001 7.3L Excursion's temp guage started to rise rapidly to max. There is coolant leaking from what I believe is the thermostat dripping on to the rear right (while sitting in the vehicle) of the engine block. Overflow resevoir was empty and gurgled back up when the cap was slowly released then immediately drained back into the rad. There is also what looks like a vacuum pump over the right foward wheel well that is making an unusual noise that has not been heard before. When coming back down at mainly idle with very little load on the engine the temp guage read normal where it had for the entire trip. Any help or good shops in the area would be greatly appreciated.

try pressure testing the system to see if the coolant cap is sticking closed, and not letting excess pressure drain out, then start looking at the components, the thermostat, and water pump (virtually the only moving parts).

Have you had your coolant changed? and what is this pump on the right wheel well? on my year, the vacuum pump is on the driver side (easier than left right).
The water pump is located in the middle, just above the crank pully.

its hard to tell whats happening, with vague text. could you supply us with some pictures?
