I recently changed the primary fuel filter and ended up taking a diesel bath. I watched a video first and repeated the steps from the video. First I opened the fuel-water separator drain for 25 seconds and closed it back up. Next I placed rags under the housing as some diesel was expected to come out when removing the cap. In the video a little diesel spills out and it stops. Mine never stopped running out and I had a steady stream the entire time. I ended up stuffing in the new filter in a hurry since diesel was running everywhere. Is there something wrong with my HFCM unit since the diesel never stopped flowing?

Diesel will always flow out of the HFCM. It's meant to drain water and relieve the pressure before you pull the cap off for the filter.

Could be. What year model engine do you have? One of Ford's improvements (late 04 model year) was to put an "anti-siphon" leg in the fuel line returning fuel to the HFCM from the regulator.

A way to get around it is to change the filter when the tank level gets down to 1/4 and park on an incline when changing the filter.

One thing I do a little differently is that I leave the water drain open until I loosen the cap ... and let it drain out before closing the water drain.

The 05 Excursion could have an 04 engine, so no way for us to know if you got the fuel line mod or not.

Also, don't expect the water drain to stop just by leaving it open. You have to change more than that one thing in your procedure.

Never change it with a full tank. Change when close to a 1/4 tank and it shouldn't be quite so bad. It's still messy though.
