I have a 2004 4wd f250 with a 6.0. It has 238k miles and does not have any history of engine problems.

It has recently become hard to start. I can reliably start it by cranking the engine for a long time (like 20 seconds), but it only barks hesitatingly and takes a while to get going.

When the truck is running it sounds fine and drives fine but when the engine rpm is below 900 the oil pressure gauge falls from normal immediately down to zero (and the check gauges light comes on as it does). The engine oil pressure immediately shoots back up to normal when the engine goes above 900rpm.

What might be going on here?

Are you using an OEM oil filter cap and an OEM oil filter? Can you take a picture of the top of your engine and post it?
