Hey folks, figured I'd post some interesting info. Took my 95 F250 PSD to a Ford dealership to have them check on something specifically (to confirm my thoughts on leaky up pipes) and was quoted for a few additional items. Wanted to get the forum's thoughts on these numbers because I was really surprised at how much these some of these were:

Rear drum service (left & right) - $540.00
Clean up pipe hardware and tighten pipes - $325.00
Manifold replacement (if tightened up pipes did not solve for leak) - $1,400.00

Service items:
fuel filter service kit - $230.00!!!!!!
coolant service - $250.00
thermostat - $431.00!!!!!!
oil change synthetic - $110.00

I was surprised at how much most everything was except for the oil change - $110 for oil, filter, and tech hours? I thought that was impressively good considering the last oil change I paid $135 for oil plus filter at my local auto parts store.

Let me know your thoughts!

That is insane to me. You can do a fuel filter in like 1 minute.

What does coolant service mean? Why a new thermostat? Coolant service and thermostat should be combined.

If I was someone who couldn't do their own work then I would say other prices are a little on the high side.

All the dealership 7.3 techs are long retired so find a Powerstroke certified shop that KNOWS the 7.3.

When I dropped it I told them I was going to flush my coolant system and replace thermostat soon because I know it stuck open and temps run too cool. He went ahead and quoted that knowing I am planning to do it eventually. I told them I was due for oil change and fuel filter which are easy replacements and he added to the quote as well.

Was just blown away with these prices. I am happy to continue doing these myself with an ice cold beer in one hand and a wrench in the other!

Prices seems kind of high. You can go under the truck and determine where exhaust leaks are accruing which is usually indicated by black soot. It was easy to see my driver's side manifold was bad by black soot all over the back side of the manifold with just 2500 miles on the motor, and the bolts were torqued down. $500 for a new manifold and hardware and install. It seems the driver's side manifold is more expensive than the passenger's side for some reason. If you find a decent shop that knows 7.3's keep it. It took me 3 tries' before I found a great shop with honest people that knew what they were doing. Good luck unless you drink that beer than luck is out of the picture.

They won't be tightening the up pipes at all. Don't waste their time and your money. It is likely the gasket has rubbed the pipes from vibration for so long that replacing the gaskets won't even help. I had that issue on my 99 7.3.

I ended up buying new stainless steel up pipes for 400$ from riffraff I believe. Check for soot near the manifolds, it's easy to spot. If all the soot is near the firewall you know it's the up pipes.

The rest of the prices don't look too bad. Remember you're paying for the labor of not just the mechanic but everyone else in the chain as well as overhead. Hey you gotta make a profit...

The service items do look a little pricey but hey, you're not the one disposing of fluids etc. I can dispose of fluids free at the local recycle but businesses cannot.

For the prices on those items..
You can get a very good quality basic set of tools for all the jobs listed. These trucks do not need many oddball tools.
Get all parts and supplies.
Get enough beer and pizza for the weekend to feed the buddy that comes over to assist.
Have fuel money left over for about a month or two.

None of the listed items are very difficult or time consuming by themselves, combined may take a good weekend and an eye problem on Friday if doing in yourself.

I agree with @White95f250...

Check around. Hopefully, if you can't find a Powerstroke shop, you can locate a good independent DIESEL shop who knows all years.
If not, "Hold my beer (or two)" and wrench works. I do it on the things I have tools and knowledge for.

Thanks guys, dealership was trying to sell all these services I usually do myself but wanted them to confirm my up pipes were in fact leaking. I plan to find a day to replace these although the actual pipes are cracked. I think bellowed pipes should do the trick. Stealership said they weren’t tightened down all the way and were trying to sell me on cleaning hardware and retightening everything - I can turn my own wrench. I had them confirm there was no diagnostic fee if I had a service performed so they did the oil change for me (first oil change in about 8 or 9 years I haven’t done myself).

All in all, just surprised at some of the prices that showed up in the quote…maybe inflation idk but they charge $180/hour for diesel techs which sounds better than the Lexus techs.

Still looking for a good independent diesel shop in eastern NC. If anyone has recs let me know but as of now, the driveway and backyard auto care does the trick.

Just the other day I took my F250 to the same Dealership ( changed name) where my service tech got promoted to Drive Manager?-lol
Had such a great relationship with him that I decide to swing by for an oil change and a looksey over on the 36k -3yr Bumper to Bumper Warranty.
New OP Service Advisor hands me a printed Ford "cheat sheet" on cost of services provided
Needless to say I will be performing the basic oil & fuel filter service from now on!

Oil change is actually underpriced. 3 1/2 gallons of synthetic oil cost more than $110. I guess they are making up for that price by way over charging for the thermostat and fuel filter service. Agree with installing the bellowed up-pipes. Rear brake drums are about $85 each $40 for shoe's and $60 for hardware kits. I do most of the 7.3 work around here on weekends. I would NEVER take a 7.3 or most any other diesel to any shop within 300 miles of here. There is a early 99 7.3 with 130K mile's for sale on facebook near here for $750 that says needs injector work. When I asked about who determined it needed injector work and the specifics all they could tell me is two different shops said it needed injector work. The last time a shop said that on a engine around here, it needed a piston.

My wife was driving our 96 PS back from Burning Man one year and the cam shaft position sensor went out. The Reno Ford dealer wouldn't touch it because the truck was over 10 years old. Perhaps the truck was too dusty to allow in their clean bays. The tow truck driver found a shop that could deal with the (relatively simple) problem.
