I've had a long term problem with my 2001 F-350 7.3 Powerstroke. When running highway speeds truck would die and dash lights would all cycle, like starting, take foot off accelerator and press back down and go on.
If idle, likely truck would die. Only code ever set was CPS sensor. It's been replaced a few times.
I cleaned the connector at the EEC and no difference. Tonight I changed the CPS again and this time cleaned some of the wiring harness grounds to frame.
Something new I found was at the big square connector on the drivers side valve cover. I took it loose and 3 of the wires had melted insulation where they had been in contact with the valve cover. I used a high temp tape and covered the damage. I also swiped about 3 inches of jacket from the end of the battery cable and put that around these wires to try and isolate them from the heat of the valve cover.
Seems to run OK now but will need a road trip to confirm.
What I would also like to know is how were these supposed to come from the factory? There was a 3 inches of uncovered wires between the plug and the PVC jacket and no standoff to keep these off the valve cover. I would really like to have a wire standoff there but don't know what to use. Thanks....

It's been a while on this and I still haven't taken any pictures of the connector but am very happy to report after 18 months of use the engine has not cut out one time and I have not lost any more CPS sensors! So I'm pretty well convinced it was where the insulation was burned through on the bottom of the umbilical from the EEC to the connector on the block for the harness on the block.
Haven't followed this topic at all, so if someone else on the board has also found this solution to this problem; in my case it does work. So nice to have a healthy engine. At 155K I'm going to be driving this for a while still. :)

My 2003 6L built in 12/2002 is sending fault codes that my entire right bank of injectors are bad. Truck blows grey smoke at start up and vibrates like crazy. Driving never smooths out and is like driving on a wash board ( if your old enough to know what that is ). You-Tube points to injector wiring or FICM injector harness. I ordered one but found links later that said not for vehicles built prior to Jan. 2003. No where can a find any further info on the correct harness or if the one I bought (5C3Z-9D930-A or cross reference number 9L2Z-12A581-AA) will work. I will change to main harness after I get the injector harness replaced to see if that solves my problem. Also see chaffing at my engine gas and oil filter locations - that's why I want to change the main as well.
Anyone have any data on 6L built before Jan. 2003 would be wonderful, i.e. correct part numbers for injector and main engine wiring harnesses.
Thanks for this wonderful site!
