Help! Recently bought a 2003 6.0 powerstroke and am chasing the p0401 egr flow insufficient code. I cleaned the egr cleared the code and it came back. The connector on the egr has a damaged wire but it’s still hanging on. Checked cac boots looks to be no holes or leaks but will check more thoroughly tomorrow. It is a ca emissions truck and can’t get smogged Bc of this code. Is there something I’m missing, what else should I be looking at?

Have a 2003 6.0 powerstroke recently replaced the icp sensor. Truck is bone stock no bulletproofing done and started to get a no crank issue when trying to start. When turning the key to run position to warm glow plugs I hear all usual noises and everything works (dash lights and radio) but no crank not even any noises when trying to turn it over. It doesn’t happen all the time usually it starts just fine but other times not. When it wont crank over I just pop the hood n use the connector on passenger side to start it by sticking it to the positive terminal and starts perfectly fine no issues. Wondering if someone can point me the right direction as the whats wrong

I have a 2003 6.0 powerstroke 2 weeks ago I had surging and dying while driving threw p2285 replaced icp sensor with oreilys brand icp and pigtail Bc they didn’t carry oem sensor. 2 weeks go by truck is fine runs great no issues however yesterday it threw p2285 again no symptoms maybe the slightest rough idle can’t really tell if it’s me or a very minor rough idle. Trucks runs smooth but can’t clear the code and when I do it comes back IMMEDIATELY. My scanner doesn’t scan for voltages on these sensors but I bought an oem sensor from a dealership Incase I need to replace again. Anyone have an idea why it’s coming back and unable to clear with no symptoms of a poor running truck?

Also when I replaced the original sensor there was oil leaking into the pigtail so I knew that was the issue and replaced both sensor and connector

Plugged (or missing) egr cooler. That bad wire should be the first thing you address, replace the pigtail and go from there.

The wire is chaffed right at the end where it meets the connector. Do you know of a place to get replacements of those connectors that connect in the actual egr valve?

Gonna own a diesel, you need to be able to get codes and monitor the system when there is a problem

These should be mandatory for any 6.0
Fuel pressure gauge -- M12x1.5 thread adapter
Base oil pressure gauge -- test port on front of oil cooler housing 9/16x18 imperial o-ring fitting

I suggest downloading ForScan and using the OBDLink MX+ or the BAFX adapter for troubleshooting
Torque Pro would be good for everyday use with an old phone or tablet
Scan Gauge is small and simple -- can be mounted in front of the instrument cluster
there are other monitors, but the price goes higher

you do not need the license for troubleshooting

  • Faulty Injector Control Pressure (ICP) sensor
  • Injector Control Pressure (ICP) sensor harness is open or shorted
  • Injector Control Pressure (ICP) sensor circuit poor electrical connection
your '03 has a high possibility of harness problems -- insulation worn thru or turned to goo from oil saturation -- that code can be from either open or short conditions

take a good look at the underside of the harness where it contacts, use a flashlight and mechanics mirror so you do not need to twist on the harness, possibly causing damage

How far back should I track the harness I replaced the pig tail and am going to redo wiring for it today the original pig tail had been covered in oil from previous sensor. Is there any handheld obd2 I can buy that’ll read what I need read. I have a fixd obd2 plug in and a handheld obd2 scanner so I can pull codes and read them but I can’t read sensor voltages and what not. When I get home I can upload pics of what I have and what I’m reading

A bluetooth OBD adapter will be your best option.

I have an iPhone so I was looking at the mx+ Bluetooth. This one will be fine to read all icp sensor readings? I just wanna make sure before I spend the extra $100

The MX+ does Bluetooth that is compatible with newer iPhones
I hav both of those adapters that I listed, the MX is a little faster and has auto shutoff, the BAFX does the job, but is a basic unit

I have the less expensive OBDlink LX which seems to work fine with Android devices via Bluetooth. Haven't tried it with an iPhone, and the package doesn't claim compatibility with iOS devices.

Got a 2003 6.0 and I have a intermittent no crank problem. Everything works fine when warming the plugs but half the time when I go to start…nothing. Dash radio everything works fine and I don’t think it’s a fuse because sometimes it starts fine sometimes not. Starts perfectly fine when I jump the yellow and blue wire to the positive battery terminal on passenger side with key in run position. Replaced the ignition switch thinking that was the issue but wasn’t. Also doesn’t start when in neutral either. Has anyone had this issue or know the solution?

In my signature block is a good reading that has a schematic at the end. You can see where the signal goes when you turn the key. Check the fuses it goes through.

Since it works when it is jumped, I do suspect a wiring or fuse issue.

A little history I’ve had egr code issues but truck has always ran fine w them. I’ve replaced the egr valve w an autozone egr, replaced the pig tail harness, cleaned ebp sensor and still throws codes. At first it was only p0401…few months down the road it’s now p0401 p0404 and p0405. Truck runs perfectly fine but wondering if anyone knows what the issue could be

Damn forgot some stuff. So p0404 and p0405 only recently popped up and it was the day after I had beat the bricks off her with some heavy acceleration. So could that have messed up my egr valve? Also can someone point me in the direction of iat2 sensor so I can clean that.

Your EGR codes could very likely be because you bought a cheap EGR valve that didn't last.

P0405 is an electrical code for a bad EGR valve, bad wiring/connector to EGR valve, or an unplugged EGR valve during testing.

I need to get this issue sorted out for ca smog. My truck was throwing p0401 code for insufficient egr flow. I used forscan to monitor pids and saw egr desired didn’t match egr actual. Replaced the egr valve yesterday with a new OEM valve and have the same issue. Recently had it bulletproofed and they cleaned the intake and installed a new egr. So I don’t think those are the issue. My maf readings seem low .15-.18g/s at idle but I cleaned that last week and have the same readings. Iat 1, iat 2, coolant, oil, and trans all tested good on a cold soak temp check so I’m lost. Can someone point me in the right direction.
