I just recently picked up a E99 knowing that it had turbo issues. I finally had some time to start looking at it today and found 1/4" or more in out play and alot of side play. I figured it would be in bad shape since oil was dripping out exhaust at a good rate when running. I also noticed oil in the valley so not sure yet where that leak is from but will clean up the valley real good now and see if I can narrow that down.

I have a couple options and not sure which route to go, I have access to a complete L99 and 01 that I can get whatever parts I need off of for free (both motors had low compression and trucks were parked). With that much play would mine even be worth rebuilding? I have been looking to find a decent used E99 turbo to put on it for now until I make sure I dont have any other major issues, so far no luck finding one on craigslist ect.. I eventually would like to get around 4-450hp but that wouldn't be for another year at least.

The truck at times would seem hard to start and others would fire right off, I believe that is due to the positive battery cable clamp being broke on one battery and the negative loose on the other (I will take the cable off one of the parts trucks to eliminate this). I was also thinking since I was this far in and since I dont know when they were last changed to go ahead and replace the glow plugs and probably the uvch. The relay tested good and all plugs read good according to ohm but figured $80 is cheap insurance with winter coming soon, or be in worse shape if previous owner didnt use motorcraft glow plugs. Is there anything else I should do while I am waiting for parts that you would recommend.

Thanks

your turbo pedestal o-rings are probably leaking.
you could always pull the turbo, intake spider, intake plenums, intercooler tubes and intercooler out of one of the later model trucks and put it on your e99.
since you have all the parts it would work.
but since your e99 does not have an air intake heater (AIH) you would have to plug the port on the later model intake spider.
20 bucks for the AIH delete from riffraff.
20 bucks for gtp-38 turbo reinstall kit.
also im not sure if you need to use the later model up-pipes as well maybe not.
also i would change up-pipe donut gaskets while i was in there as well.
good luck!
