Hello all! Sorry if this is a common question, but I would like to get a good idea of some key things to check out when buying a 2000-2003 truck with 7.3. I've never owned a diesel before. Couldn't even tell you specifically why I want one. I've just liked them for awhile and am finally in a place where I would like to make the switch.

My current truck is a 79 F250 supercab with a 460. I love the truck, but ready for something a little newer. The new truck will be my daily driver, family hauler, and hopefully in the next year or two, a quad and travel trailer puller (plan is two quads in the bed, and a 20-25 trailer) that I will take camping 6-12 times a year.

I also usually do most all mechanical work on my vehicles save for big things like engine or transmission rebuilds. Although I have no experience with diesels, yet. Unless I get a lemon or something, it will most likely be at least another 10 years before my next truck. I have to buy from a dealer as I need to finance about 2/3rds of it. For my price range, what I see in CL seems about 100k-150k miles.

I've been spending the past few weeks researching Ford's diesels and at the moment, have settled on the later model 7.3. I've taken several notes from watching all the powerstrokehelp.com videos on youtube (and many others), etc. But figured I would now come get the opinions of real owners now that I know a bit more from my research.

Any help/info is greatly appreciated! TIA!

If ya can get a 6speed, try to get one with the original engine (if it's only get 150k and it's been rebuilt that means the truck has be severely beat on and/or not taken care of). When ur looking at it look everything over, fluids ect, look for blow by, look for sighs of leaks, even if ya find a oil leak it prolly not a big deal and something that can be fixed under a hour. When ya start it see how long it take to start and it it idles rough for a sec or two. From the on it Perty much like any other truck.

Thanks for the info! Already found several things to add to my list, a big one being the avoidance of transmissions with the mechanical diode issue.

Mentioned here and in the link, I should be checking Blow By. How should I do a good check for this? I've seen a couple videos saying check for thick and/or puffing smoke out the oil filler hole, and also putting the cap upside down and seeing if it bounces/blows off. Is that good enough check?

Also, how can I tell if its been chipped/programmed? I mean, is this an internal thing or will it be obvious with some external (like dash mounted) visible device?

Thanks for the info!

As for your idle comment, are you saying it shouldn't idle ruff at all? Or that its ok for it to idle ruff for a second or two?
