hey everyone. my 06 is pretty stock intake straight pipe blue spring and banjos. i have canned sct tunes right now. would it be worth it to buy a custom tune for a non studded truck? i have studs but im too cheap to pay someone to put them in when i could do it myself with a hoist lol. thanks guys.

also i was looking at tsd super panty dropper or looney wild by vivian if i were to run a custom tune right now. thanks!

I would stud it first my head gaskets went out at 40k with a 40hp tow tune just pulling a little bass boat

You don't want SPD or Looney Wild on a non-studded truck IMO, but they do make lesser versions of both for non-studded engines. If you're using the canned tunes already, you probably are at no bigger risk running MPD (mild panty dropper from TSD), SPD (gearhead) or Looney (Quick Tricks) and they will improve performance over the canned tunes. I'm currently running MPD and have ran it and SRL for the last 15k miles. I'm sure if you over use the capabilities that the tunes bring out you could do some damage, but if your engine is healthy and you use some common sense it should be able to handle these milder tunes. Just make sure the tuners know that the truck is not studded and any other mods you may have.

thanks for the replies! i forgot to mention that although i dont have studs in yet but i DO have ARP headBOLTS. so i imagine they would be better than stock bolts. i emailed tsd just waiting on reply i told him everything i have. some ppl say if it hasnt popped with canned performance tune that it isnt that big of a power difference with custom tunes like spd or looney wild. but i dont believe that 1 bit. theres gotta be alot more cylinder pressure with those hotter custom tunes. id trade my middle nut to get my headstuds in.

Yes, the hotter tunes will create higher cylinder pressure and probably more advanced timing to boot. There are people on here that are running the higher power tunes without studs, but they know the risks. There are also several that have ran the hotter tunes and had to replace their HGs. While no one can ever be certain it was the tune that did them in, if it looks like a duck...

Not sure why an 05-07 would handle anything better than an 03-04, they use the same bolts IIRC. I think the only difference is the dowel size and I don't see that making much of a difference.

Quick Tricks has a Looney tune for non-studded and studded. The studded is Looney Wild. I ran the non-studded version for about 2 months, up until this weekend because I too didn't have studs. No issues, but then again, only 2 months of run time. Mechanic did say there was little sign of HG issues on mine, but whether that was from the 2 months running a tune, or the fact they were original and has 130k miles on it...won't ever know.

Studded now, ready to dump the Looney Wild in and see how she runs.

You can get them cheaper from Tousley Ford, but my HGs were $328 from the local Ford dealer near where my work was done.

From personal experience, i had the panty dropper tune for a non studded truck and the looney tune for a non studded truck, it was good, but i found that my tranny was starting to slip, on my new truck im only going to go with a 75 hp tune so there wont be so much wear and tear on my tranny, my truck is studded. Thats just my personal opinion though
