So I just bought a 2004 f250 diesel yesterday. I drove it home 300 miles no problems. Drove it about 5 miles today and was pulling into a parking lot and it started to cut out if i gave it any gas(fuel) like it was being flooded or out of timing. I shut it off and started it up a few times and it would idle ok but as soon as I got on the pedal it would start cutting out. I could gradually get the rpms up (kind of like it was running on only 4 cylindersand but it wasn't) and it would smoke. So after I dropped my daughter off I left to limp back home if I could and did so for about 2 miles going about 10 mph. Then I was able to get the rpms up while in gear and it stopped cutting out. I stopped and started a few times under heavy acceleration and it ran fine(nice black smoke). I had my window down and did notice a wierd kind of popping sound like air coming back into the filter can when I let off the gas a couple times but then that quit as well. Any ideas ???
Thanks for any and all help!

Very well could be the screen in your fuel tank were clogged up and the bucking and jerking knocked the crud off, certainly sounds like a fuel issue and on my truck when I had something clogging the pick up it did exactly as you describe

There wasn't much bucking or jerking around but who knows? Is there any way to check the screen??
Thanks much for the ideas!
I should say more like cutting out and sputtering like it's starving for fuel... The only way to check the screen would be to drop the tank...

Normally with an issue like that it's either fuel related, or most likely boost related.

Did it smoke at all when it was running rough?

Really you shouldn't have that much black smoke, unless you have it chipped up.

The noise you're hearing is sometimes called "turbo bark" or "chuffing". It can be a normal condition, but if you're hearing it now and you've never noticed it before I'm guessing you have something going on with your turbo. It would be nice to see what boost pressure is doing. I'm thinking you either have a turbo hanging up or could be an EGR valve issue.

Here's a video that explains turbo bark a little.

On a truck that's chipped up you will hear this more then normal, and it isn't an issue. But on a stock truck if your hearing this more then before then I'd bet your turbo is stuck.
Probably just need to pull it off and clean up the VGT fins.

I have heard the "chuffing" on other trucks before and that's not the noise i heard today. It was more of a popping like someone knocking on the plastic air filter box. As for my main problem, do you think a bad fuel filter would plug and then unplug to cause the cutting out? I just drove it again and all is fine.

The plug and unplug thing is why I was leaning towards is being the screens in the tank, let me see If I can find a writeup on it, it wouldn't hurt to change the fuel filter tho... I really do believe you have a fuel issue

Maybe, wouldn't hurt to check out fuel pressure. Seems like usually with a fuel issue it gets worse and worse, but who knows. Could have been something got stuck in the fuel pressure regulator and managed to work it's way out.

Thanks for all the help guys. This is my first diesel truck and I knew before I got it that there are a lot of potential problems with the 6.0. I just hope it's nothing major. I guess I am just going to have to get educated and start checking things off one at a time.
THANKS AGAIN! I will be visiting this sight forum often.
